Ernest Palmer and his son Charles both were in the 122nd Bn.
Charles was attested, giving his father as next of kin, on Nov 8 1915, but this was altered to Dec 14. He gave his birth date as 24 September 1894 but he was actually born in 1890 and shows on the 1891 British census as 6 mo.
In 1916 Charles gives his father's address as Hdqrs. Detail 122nd O.S Bn.
Charles was sent to England arriving 9.6.1917. On 5.10.17 he was granted permission to marry and was
married in November to Kitty Eileen Blay. I have ordered his marriage cert. From June 1917 till December his assigned pay was paid to his mother, Elizabeth. From Dec 1917 till March 1918 it was paid to his wife in England giving his wife as next of Kin.. Both at $20 per month. It was then suspended till further notice and from June was paid to his mother with two months back pay but at $15 per month.
7.5.18 Charles had GSW returning to duty 10.5.1918. 29 Sept Charles had shell shock cond and retd to duty 4.10.18.
19.1.19 he was granted 10 days special leave, place St Dunton. Retd to duty 29.1.19. It does not say what the special leave was for. I cannot find a St Dunton. It has been suggested that this is Dunton in Bedfordshire and that his wife may have died as there is the death of a Kate Palmer in Biggleswade, Beds at about that time. However I suspect it may be because his father had died. 21.3.19 he was SOS to CDD Buxton and returned to Canada14.4.19 on Olympic. He received discharge on compassionate grounds Apr 23 1919 auth A.G 3 B. 2 P2199 d/11-3-19 At this time he gave his mother as next of kin.
His discharge medical said he had GSW rt hand and rt foot, Physical cond good.
Ernest Palmer. Attested 3rd Jan 1916 giving his dob as 2 Sept 1874, saying he had previously served 2 years in RAMC, South Africa.
28 Jan 1918 Ernest re attested, giving dob as 2 Sept 1875 saying he had previously been discharged after 17 months due to pneumonia and rheumatism. His medical page is blank except for a stamp 482-27-2 then a smudge and a note" Re-attested for further treatment." There is some unclear writing upside down at the top dated 27.2.18.
My questions. Would the special leave of Charles be in France? He married a Belgian Girl, May 1920 saying he was a bachelor. Does anyone know where ST Dunton is? Could this s/l be connected with the first wife, some connection with the Belgian girl, Marie Piret who he married only 6 weeks after she and her parents embarked for Canada from Antwerp.
I assume that the discharge was due to the death of his father, is there any way to find out if he died about this time. I believe pneumonia and rheumatism were associated with the flu epidemic at that time.
Ernest was born in 1867, giving his dob on the 1911 Can census as Sept 1862 and age as 48. No doubt because his wife was 17 years older than him. She was born in 1850 and was about 60 in 1911 but giving her age as 52.
