Hello,

I'm currently a first year university student taking a double major in PoliSci and Public Admin. I have always been interesting in joining the Canadian Forces and I've recently been doing research into the reserves. I have a couple of questions regarding the process of joining:

Does applying for a reserve officer position require a completed bachelor's degree or is there an option similar to the ROTP of applying while currently studying for a degree?

Is it possible to be a reserve officer while also studying abroad? I understand there are a minimum number of hours of training required on a weekly basis, but is it possible to do a month long chunk of training once a year? Just curious whether I should apply before or after attempting to get a graduate degree.

Finally, my degree offers Cooperative Education, any possibility of doing my COOP with the Canadian Forces in any capacity?

Thank you and happy St.Patty's day!

Good day BrohanSolo,

There are officer entry plans into the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve that allow you to serve part time while completing your degree. For more information on joining the Primary Reserve Force follow this link: http://www.forces.ca/en/page/careeroptions-123#tab3

Service in the primary reserves involves minimum training commitments to be met in order to maintain active status. Individuals not able to meet the minimum requirements can request to be excused from duty and training (ED&T) for short periods of time normally not exceeding a period of 6 months and the request must be approved by the commanding officer of the reserve unit.

CO-OP entry programs are available in some areas for individuals joining the Primary Reserve force. The CO-OP program is for high school students to earn high school credits while completing their basic courses.

I'm currently a high school student, and I have applied for the reserves in Edmonton, Alberta. I have never heard of this CO-OP program, but it sounds very interesting. Which areas is this program available in?

The military co-op programme has been discussed elsewhere on this Site. A search should turn it up quickly. It is not offered in all areas.
