Just to start off I wanna let everyone know I'm recruit so don't bash me if I say something stupid please. I have a half tent(if thats the proper term to call it) and I wanted to practice setting it up on my own time.... I have a general idea how it is to be set up but Ive herd of so many ways and now I'm not even sure how its suppose to look.... Does anyone have a guide? Ive seen the good old fashion http://www.142dpvi.org/kit_articles/_derived/shelter_half_uses.htm_txt_shelterhalf2.gif tents before and i know how to set those up.. i think.... but to get the right equipment for it do i have to purchase it all individually or can I buy a kit.... I'm in need of some real guidance here lol. Secondly... Am I even aloud to set it up outside of an FTX?

It's normally called a shelter half or more commonly, ground sheet.  You can set it up anyway you want as long as the sides are taut and it will shed water off you and your kit.  A good investment is a set of aluminum tent pegs and some assorted bungee cords.  You can get them cheap at Walmart or Canadian Tire.

would you happen to have a list of all the ways showing how it could be set up?

"...........and some assorted bungee cords."

Bungees are great for the summer.  They are a disaster if you get some wet snow.  The thing will be right down on top of you!!

the help is greatly appreciated. But in that diagram is says "using tent poles" so if the CF doesn't supply me with tent poles i cant set it up? and how tall is a half shelter suppose to be? I've also noticed something called a ground sheet.. Is that part of my half tent or is it something separate?

I know some of these questions may sound stupid but I want to know as much as possible about my gear before I have to :P

A ground sheet is the same thing as a shelter half.  Like PPCLI MCpl said, try and get some of your own tent pegs.  If not, scrounge up some sticks  or branches in the area to use in place of pegs.  The height of your shelter half will depend on the tactical situation.  Obviously the lower the shelter half the more tactical it is.  If the exercise is non-tactical you can afford to have it set up higher which would be more comfortable.  Situation will dictate.

Also, if you find you're having difficulties, you will be shown how to make a hootch on your field ex on BMQ anyway.

Ah...I remember drawing that diagram :) ... Yes.... The way that that is drawn means that no tree is needed.  I modified my spare tent poles to the right length...  String and a tree would work too.

I've never seen anyone set up a hootch using tent poles, as they're a pain to lug around, though I'd imagine it's much better if you've managed to get ahold of some and are willing to carry them.

Don't worry too much, everything you need to know will be taught on your basic training course. To be blunt, you're better off not knowing anything before hand, so you don't develop bad habits through unguided self learning.

That being said, the best way to support a hooch is to stake it to the ground, and then tie the sides to trees. It's also the text book way. I'm actually a fan of the text book hotch, because it works rather well (Compared to other more common ways of setting up the hootch at least) in the weather conditions I'm used to (horizontal rain) There are so many different ways though, you could probably write a book on it.

If you cut them right then they fit right into your ruck when folded :) and take up very little room.

A half tent is a single man shelter..

To my knowlege, there is no such thing as a 'half tent'. It appears as if the lad was mixing up his terms (understandble) and the other comment regarding 'taking away half' was, as I see it, a joke.

I guess, you don't like tent or you have a problem regarding with tent, right?

Well, it's been 4 years so he probably has it sorted out by now.  ;)

I think that is one of those Chinese websites trying to sell their junk. The custom signature has a link.
