Fetish fair whips up plenty of interest
Boot polishers, spankers relish action

There was leather and latex, bullwhips and bootblacks.
This was no ordinary day at the fair.
The Fetish Fair took over three blocks of Church St. yesterday, in the heart of the gay village, to celebrate all predilections.
"We leave it open to everybody," said Cam Lewis, the executive producer of the fair which is hosted by the Church-Wellesley Village business improvement area. "A fetish is something that turns them on. Some people get turned on by people in suits. Some people go to the extreme and get dressed in full leathers."
It started four years ago as a way to draw people to Church St. in the lull that follows Pride Week. Lewis said he expected 15,000 to 20,000 people yesterday. In the past, it has drawn everyone from drag queens to Klingons.
"A fetish fair seemed to go along with our community," Lewis said. "It opens up the doors to have a lot of fun. That's what a fetish is all about -- having fun."
The fair opened with a bootblack competition among those whose fetish is caring for boots. The first clients were four Toronto Police officers.
"That's my husband down on his knees in front of a man in uniform," one man shouted to roars of laughter.
Matt Wilson, 31, competed in his first bootblack competition, a hobby he picked up a couple of years ago. He's even raised money polishing boots for a Timmins-area AIDS group.
"I like the feel of boots, cleaning and polishing them," Wilson said.
Ironically, Wilson has only one pair of boots, saying it's tough to find footwear for his size 16-18 feet.
One cafe served up a "kinky brunch," promising to serve spankings upon request.
Booths offered jockstraps for sale as well as wooden paddles from burningbuttcreations.com and gently used military and police uniforms. If charity was a fetish, there was a booth advertising a fundraising walk next month for the AIDS Committee of Toronto. There was also entertainment on two stages.
It was warm on Church St., the mercury reaching 22C but it wasn't too hot for leather.
"Mine is well ventilated," said one man, whose backside was al fresco in a pair of leather chaps.
