... and no, not at the Legion Dance...  ::)  Keep your sexist and inappropriate comments to yourselves..

Anti-hunters , leave me alone and don't bother reading this.... 8)

Actually, it is the Collared Peccary, or javelina, to which I am referring. I got drawn for a javelina tag this year, archery only. Season is Jan 1st to 31st. They are quite an interesting creature, weighing on average 30-60 lbs. Although they look similar, they are not directly related to pigs. Here though, everyone calls them that. In the US, they are only found in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. This is only my second year hunting them (missed one cleanly last year). The quality of the meat seems debatable - most people get it made into summer sausage or chorizo (a Mexican sausage, sort of) so that is probably what I will do too. I've attached a pic, courtesy of www.javelinahunter.com

I'll keep you posted  ;D

Interesting you mention this. I was thinking of planning my first hunting trip to an area in NW Manitoba to hopefully hunt some wolves or other animal that needs thinning due to overpopulation and ruining the balance of things.

But to be truthful despite my best efforts, I have no real idea what I am doing nor where to begin. I tried to find beginners hunting guides on the net and in stores but to no avail..

Since you have been hunting, I was wondering if you could pass a few tips this way to let me know what I should do?

Coincidentally, I have a sideline as a Booking Agent. Booking Agents find Outfitters for people, based on their criteria such as budget, physical condition, species sought, experience, area desired, etc. I work with almost 40 Outfitters worldwide including Canada, the US, New Zealand, Chile/Argentina, South Africa, and Namibia. My services are free, and I don't just do hunting, but fishing, photo safaris, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and even whale-watching!

Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]  and I'll see what I can do for you.

You know that's .... strangely convenient that you would happen to be one!

Once I get my priorities and budget squared away, expect that email!

By the way, what sort of rifle/shotgun are you going to be hunting with?

I am in the same boat,  I will e-mail you in the following new year, something i have always been interested in.  I fished for the fist time in the summer and I am hooked. So I want to try an hunt.  I was think rifles/shotguns, but archery piques my interest.

I am a city boy, so I don't get out in the wildnerss much, now that I am out.  And I miss i tlike heck!

cheers

Here's some pics of "Ye Olde Hunting Grounds"

Near a place called "Dudleyville"

This one, ironically, is near a place called "Queen Valley"

I would love to roam that area and camp out there let alone hunt in it.  Especially the mountains in that first picture

Muskrat, are these animals similar to wild boar I have hunted wild boar for the past 9 years
and it took 2 years to understand their habits. I was curious do these animals try to get on
your backtrail it usually happens with the boars I have hunted. One more question how aggressive
are the animals.

                    Regards OLD F of S

Archery.. now that's really interesting.

What sort of bow do you use?

Here its open season on all ferals. The beasts in question are as follows:

-feral pigs
-feral deer
-feral goats
-feral cats and dogs
-feral water buffalo
-feral brumbies
-feral donkeys
-feral camels
-feral foxes
-feral rabbits; and
any other introduced creature not native to Australia. Even cane toads, but the weapon of choice for thats a golf club   ;D

Have a giggle on www.ausafari.com.au or do a generic search for 'Australian hunting' on www.google.com.

Cheers, and good hunting!

Wes

Well, DomesticNiner is sick in bed with bronchitis, so I'm home today... drats  :-\

Cool site, Wes - Thanks. I'd like to get one of those water buffalos

Old F of S - I don't think these guys are aggressive as boars. They often scatter when they sense danger. A distress call will bring them back sometimes. If cornered they do have some sharp teeth though, and they'll charge you - clicking their teeth, and the hair on the back all stood up.

Steve - I have a Diamondback VX made by Ben Pearson. Draw weight is 65 lbs. Carbon arrow is probably travelling around 275 fps. I'll post a picture, if I can find one. If you guys want to learn about archery, www.bowzone.ca is a good place to start...

This is quite similar to my bow, although some of my accessories are different (stabilizer, sight, etc)

That looks so unbelievably awesome. I was interested in archery as to me it seems more like "real hunting" than using a rifle.

Thanks for the website, it definately helps

I plan on doing some hunting soon. I got an Air Rifle for Christmas so I plan on taking her out and seeing what she can do ;). It's a Beeman, Model FH 500 and the velocity 475fps. Man do I love it!

Nice rifle...  Better check your game regs first. For most species, in most provinces or states, airguns are not a "legal means" of taking game.

don't be bringing it on a plane, either. we all saw the post about that, didn't we?
