John Hangartner, C.D. Sgt. (Ret). 1923-2005. John passed away on Thurs. (Aug.4/05) nine days short of his 82nd b-day at St. Mary's Hospital in Kitchener, ON.
We think John was the second to last person still alive who served with the 48th Royal Field Engineer Squadron in Waterloo before it was stood down in the early 60s. He served with the 48th in WWII and was a key member of the Legion's Branch 530. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics, an avid woodworker, and die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
A year ago this month the 48th FES was reactivated in Waterloo as part of the LFCA restructure as part of 31 CER (The Elgins), St. Thomas.
John was proud to know that his old Sqn was reborn and generously donated several pieces of Sqn history -- important photos and even some of his own personal effects. He also was an active supporter of the 48th as we have worked with the City to re-build and restore Veteran's Green Park on University Ave. in Waterloo. He was hoping to see the opening ceremony this October. His family may donate our medals so that they may be proudly displayed at our armoury.
RIP John. Chimo!
