Hello,

I'm planning on making a career as an NCM in the infantry after high school (currently gr.11) and I'm wondering if there is any benefits of joining the reserves first? i.e. Does it increase my chance of being selected for a job in the infantry over someone who is not part of the reserves?

I am also wondering if it is acceptable for all my references to be from my high school (coaches/teachers)? I do have volunteer experience but I always volunteered for big events, festivals etc.. , and never really got to know the volunteer leaders. Is it recommended that I have references from different organizations?

Thank you for your time.

NO, there is no benefit at this point in time, especially if you plan on joining the Regular Force upon completion of your High School.  If you join the Reserve Force as an Infmn, with the intent of transferring to the Regular Force, you just may end up waiting longer.

If you are interested in Regular Force as a long term goal/plan, I would suggest you submit your application to the CF, once you begin your final semester of Gr 12.

I wouldn't advise joining the reserves at this time. You won't be processed in time to get on a Jan/Feb basic which means you won't be able to do  your DP 1 in the summer. Which means you won't get qualified until after you finish your grade 12. Your CT (component transfer) also will not move that quickly until you get trained. Which likely gives you another 6 month to a year in waiting.

If you want to do a victory lap sure, but if you expect a quick transfer I wouldn't bother.

Phew~

Thanks so much for the information :salute:. Would have been unfortunate if I had signed up for the reserves without consulting you guys first. One last question. If I receive a BMQ date set before I graduate as a result of signing up at the start of my final semester, is there a way to renegotiate the date? I noticed there were DP1 courses in the summer and winter so I would ideally want to do BMQ after I graduate and head on towards DP1 in the winter. I want to at least graduate high school. Or is there no worries about BMQ dates before I graduate even if I sign up at the start of my final semester?

Once again thank you for your time.

You might be able to bump your BMQ serial date to finish school, or they may dump you back into the merit list where you play the waiting game again.
