Hello, so I am in my final year of high school and I am considering being a medical technician for the Canadian Forces. I was wondering if there is anybody that can tell me about the career and just general things (salary, responsibilities, daily life, ect). Some of the specific questions are ...

1. Is a permanent position best or is reserves?

2. I love animals and would like to have a dog, is this possible if I choose to have a permanent position?

3. Is learning French mandatory in Canada?

4. What are necessary courses or helpful Courses I need to take in high school? Also what should your average be?

5. Is a Medical Technician anything like being a Paramedic? If not what are some civilian jobs that are similar?

I have looked at the Medical Technician profit on the Canadian Forces site but I'd like to know from people who have or know about the job. I do plan on talking to a recruiter, but like I said I would like to know what people say and their experiences. Lastly, I am new to this forum and don't have very much military knowledge and know very little about the acronyms and terms in the military and would really appreciate it if people would explain them (if they use any) as I would have no idea what you are talking about.

Thanks in advance!

1. Is a permanent position best or is reserves?

Do you want a career, or a weekend gig? If your planing to go to university - reserves would be best. If you are looking for a full-time job, regular force is best.

2. I love animals and would like to have a dog, is this possible if I choose to have a permanent position?

Yes, eventually it could be once you get your own home (either on or off base). However, I would advise not geting an animal if you are single. As, it will be a nightmare with training and deployments.

3. Is learning French mandatory in Canada?

French is only mandatory in a handful of cases. It is definitely a benefit to be bilingual in the CF regardless of rank or trade. However, as a NCM you won't have to worry about being bilingual for at least 10-20 years - maybe your entire career.

4. What are necessary courses or helpful Courses I need to take in high school? Also what should your average be?

The recruiting website outlines what high school courses you need. Mainly you need biology, chemistry, and math. Your averages should be very high. I would say 85%+ if you want to stand out.

5. Is a Medical Technician anything like being a Paramedic? If not what are some civilian jobs that are similar?

Medical Technicians are the military's equivalent of paramedics. However, senior MedTechs are given the opportunities for much more advanced training and specialization. You have to be an intelligent person to become a senior MedTech.

Hope this helps...
