Good Morning,

I am writing on behalf of my son, as I have a question I am hoping you might be able to shed some light on for us.

My son just turned 18 yesterday. He had his medical and interview yesterday and was told at the end congratulations, you've passed your interview and will be meritt listed.

We are all very excited for him and proud of his accomplishments, he's wanted to do this since he was in grade 10, and he made it to this point in the process which is wonderful! Question -- if they meritt list him now, and he gets an offer, will he be allowed to finish school?? He graduates in June, and I would like him to have his grade 12 diploma, I am guessing the military would encourage that as well!?? Could he ask for a delay of his basic training if he was placed on an intake sooner than June 2014??

Another quick question. When he did his medical yesterday, he brought his eye glass prescription, but they still wanted a form filled out by the eye Dr... it has quite a few measurments that are needed to be filled out.
He would be blind as a bat without his glasses, (about -3.25 prescription) but with the glasses is corrected to 20/20. Being that he isn't applying for piliot or aircrew where the vision requirements are quite strict,  I'd expect, I am hoping he won't be denied his trade due to the outcome of his eye exam.
I guess he's at the part in the process now where we just "hurry up and wait! "

Thanks for your input!

I'm currently in a similar situation as your son, although I have not been accepted yet I am currently in the application process while also completing my last semester of high school. I was told myself by a recruiter that if you let them know that you would like to complete your high school diploma before you head off to BMQ that most of the time they will be understanding and will figure something out. The thing is, your son is already on the merit list and I assume that means he can get his call/date for BMQ anytime so its best to get in contact with his recruiter asap and let them know your current situation, they should understand and will probably set his file aside for after he graduates.

Time will tell.  They will assess his eye info and determine where he is on the vision standards.  I know that my trade requires new people to be no worse then a V3 vision category when they join.  I don't know where the limits are but I know I was a V3 when I joined and I required glasses all the time, including for driving.  Of course, that V3 category covers a wide swath of glasses standards but just leave it with them and the Recruiting Center will determine where he is once they get the info.

If there is an issue, he may want to consider surgery if he's a suitable candidate but thats a long way off yet.
