Is there anyone here spent some time at the NAVCAN facility in Cornwall Ontario? I am interested to hear all abou the facilities, accomodations, food etc.

If you check out the NCTI website, you will get an idea of the facility.  I haven't gone through them completely, but you should find some more information in this thread or this one too.  If you have any specific questions after that, ask.

I am an AEC, weapons, did several courses there.  It's OK, foods not too bad.  Rooms are nice, TV is small though.  I was there for long courses, so I brought my computer, my own stereo, bike and so on.  There are no fridges in the rooms, could be a problem.  There is a pool and rec centre, great bike trails along the river.  Ther's plenty of parking if you have a car, and your only 1 hour away from Ottawa or Montreal...

Let me know if there's anything else you want to know......

Oh noes!

How EVER did you cope!  That must have been hell, small TV, no fridge.

It used to be that you could rent a modem for your room, or use dialup.  Since Jan, the modems have not been available as they have been slllooowwwwllllyyyyy working on putting them in all of the rooms.  As of April, about 1/2 of the building had them.  Just so you are aware that you might not be guaranteed internet in your room.  However, there is a bank of public use computers, as well as a wireless area.

You can rent a barfridge for your room for $35/month. (thank you Vern!)

That's okay, having daily maid service, and having a pub right in the building, helped ease any of the stress over that. ;)

Uhmmm typo, or that damned fridge better be re-stocked for free every day!!  >:D

They'd still lose money if I were there!!  ;D

That would have been nice, for stocking!  Thank you for picking up the typo.  That's what I get for posting so soon after getting up.  :blotto:

I think airmich and the rest at NAVCAN should report that abuse and bullying to the Bullying thread.  If you can believe that that type of harassment goes on in today's military.      :D
I read that thread and actually believed it for about two sentences.  Anyone else read that thread.
;D

No worries Mich, it's only because I've been up since 0230!! I went to bed at 2215 so I actually pulled off an amazing 4 hours of sleep last night!! Whoooo!! It's a record ... must be because I have a damned cold.    (Ohhh I'm whining like a boy)

Dang, she beat me to the punch again!!!
Everyone should take a look, it's a hoot!

Great advice for those on TD or attach-posted to the school.

For those posted and moving their DGF&E does anyone have comments, good or bad about Cornwall?
Suggestions for places to rent or avoid?
Good stores, services or restaurants?
Any other useful local knowledge of the area / community.

Thank you so much for the input.

Lots of people like J&T or Moon for Thai/Japanese food (they're ok), but Thum's is easily the best Thai food in the area. Schnitzel's is a solid hangout place.  There's also a nice patio restaurant on the river about 5 min on Montreal Rd eastbound out of Cornwall for the summer.

Don't get stuck on the island between Cornwall/Massena at night.  Don't interfere with the overnight cross-river smuggling.  Don't lose your shirt at Akwesasne Casino.

Go to Ottawa or Montreal (or the internet) for clothes shopping.  The malls in Cornwall are atrocious.  Massena across the border is cheap and a decent day trip.

That's all I've got.

It's been a while since I lived there, but I remember some great bike/rollerblade/running, etc. paths along the river by the Complex. The are some nice parks in the area also.

Cornwall Square is the main shopping destination, but it's not very large. Depending on what part of town you're in, Ottawa is only about 45 minutes away or so, so it's not inconvenient to head there for more selection or activities in general that Cornwall might not offer.  Montreal also isn't too far away and it's easy to head there for the day as well.

I remember the population, in general, being largely comprised of retirees. There's understandably a very large French population in the city.

There were several elementary schools and at least 5 high-schools in the city when I lived there, but I believe their population of young people has significantly diminished.

We lived in the subdivision surrounded by Brookdale, Laflin and Tollgate. (Dundee Ave specifically.) It was a really nice, quiet neighborhood with a great park.  I'm not sure if there would be any rental properties in that area, but might be worth a try.

I'm not clicking on that link at work, but if it refers to the sauna at NavFit then yes it is commonly known...

Is the All-Ranks StoneHouse Mess still there?

The house itself is still there, but it has not been the mess for some time. NAVCAN now rents it out as a conference facility.

We've spent the past 3 days of out HHT in Cornwall, we've been to the unit at NAVCAN and checked out 8 places to live.

Thank you to everyone's posts and PMs. The comments have been very fair and helpful.

The Best Western in Cornwall is one of the best hotels in the chain that we have visited.
Even though there are stairs only, no elevator, if the rooms are available,
recommend choosing one of the 2nd floor suites (there are only 4). Each of these suites include
a fireplace and hot tub as part of each room. The outdoor pool is clean, heated and enjoyable to use.
Peppermill, the in-house restaurant service and quality is very satisfactory. Yes, they
have a full complete streamline style continental breakfast as part of your room.
We found breakfast very filling and appealing.

Peter Hickey (Royal Lepage) was our local Brookfield approved agent, who not only assisted us with
prearranging the places to view he also provided current, "boots on the ground" knowledge of the area.
He also provided useful answers on everything from fishing, car repairs, Drive Clean program,
better choice of Chinese restaurants to eat at and to the new international bridge being built.
Due to the small unit at NAVCAN, he has not handled too many IRP moves, but he provides 100% service
and we would recommend him to anyone to consider him if they are posted in/out of the area.

My 9er is looking forward to the posting to the NAVCAN facility.
