I'm some-what concerned about the plastic piece and breaking in the bitter cold.

Almost makes me want to do some snowshoe PT.

Almost.

Yeah the plastic worries me too.  My unit has a whole supply of back country skis, with plastic bindings.  After one winter ex, most of the bindings were wrecked/broken because the cold froze the plastic and both combat boots and mukluks shattered them.

This reminds me of my first day of BMQ during the summer.  One guy showed up with a pair of these  :)

Hell we were ororderedo bring all our issue kit when i did my TQ3-4middle of summer and we had snowshoes of out kit.

Plastic! How does one attach these to his ruck. Gone is the old method for sure. Looks like there will be heaps of the old type in surplus shops, and to Cadet Units too.

Have a squizz at those teeth on the bottom! Yikes, even if secured with who knows what, when jumping out of a Herc, thats more pointy things to worry about.

Hummm, I guess that progress.

Cheers,

Wes

thats another good point...bungee cords would have to become the standard method...  My unit had to do that once anyways, when we took both skiis and snowshoes out one time, for when we were still on roadways.

Heck...Those are SnowMobile SnowShoes.   I got a pair of them (Wood and Sinew) forty years ago, when Eatons had run out of the "normal" kind and I needed some in a hurry for a Scout winter camping trip.   Without the 'Tails" they are a B***ch to keep on straight.   I am also concerned with the Ice grousers incorporated in them.....you can no longer lean back on the tails (which are now missing) and "ski" down long hills.   These probably won't last too long in the system before a "real" outdoorsman shows them why the "Tail" is there.....for control and alignment while walking.   Always hated it when on my next step the Snowmobile shoe would flop sideways.   BearPaws may have been a better choice.

Wouldn't the "hinge" style horizontal bar and binding shown in this picture stop the snowshoes from flopping around?

Yeah, I can see the plastic collars breaking on the toepiece fairly easily in extreme cold.

It does look good in that it has those metal teeth. Makes for better traction than the previous snowshoe.

The bindings look pretty good as well...they look like they are way more adjustable and would fit a mukluck better, though the plastic buckles are a concern.

Other than that they look pretty much like most modern snowshoes out on the market, just beefier.

Are they made out of magnesium?

The funny thing about these , is they are called Bear Paws....this is how the box came stamped

SNOWSHOES,TRAIL,BEAR PAW, MAGNESIUM
QTY: 1 PR.

Now I am no Nanook of the North...but I think I   know the differance between other snowshoes! Are Bear PAWs not round ones in the shape of a large Bear Paw? Now I am wondering if who ever ordered them said to the   manufacturer, we need some bear paws....and the manufacturer said.....sure we have those....and stamped the box as so....makes you wonder!   mmmmmmm

From what I've seen, existing CF snowshoes are not bear paws (which are large, round shoes with tails) but Algonquin-pattern snowshoes (rounded diamond, with tails).  Those are the older, magnesium type you've been discussing.

Plastic snowshoes.  Hmph.  Can't say I'm really impressed by the idea, but time will tell.
