JTF-2: They've got dolls
Chris Wattie, National Post, Friday, April 21, 2006

''The commandos of Canada's elite Joint Task Force 2 (JTF-2) have achieved a milestone in the world of special forces units: they have their own action figures.

A Kingston-area military modeller has commissioned a pair of 12-inch, hand-made and detailed toy soldiers dressed in typical commando uniforms, the first time a Canadian army unit has been the model for its own action figure.

"The guys think it's kind of neat," said Lieutenant (Navy) Walter Moniz, the spokesman for the secretive special forces unit.

"But beyond that I don't think they give it much thought ... This is the sort of thing we've come to expect: As the unit's history and reputation builds, it's going to attract this kind of attention," Lieut. Moniz said.

The two figures were produced from scratch for a collectors' convention to be held in Kingston, Ont., this summer and organizer Scott Dommitt said they will be raffled off, with the proceeds going to the War Amps charity.

"We wanted to do something special and we wanted it to be Canadian," he said in an interview from his Amherstville, Ont., hobby business. "There's that mystique about special forces."

The two figures, which Mr. Dommitt calls "prototypes," were made by a British modeller, William Pryce-Thomas, and donated for the Great Canadian Action Figure Convention set for this Aug. 19 and 20.

The toy soldiers depict members of JTF-2 "as they would have appeared early in the Afghanistan conflict," he said.

Mr. Dommitt acknowledged, however, that getting the necessary information to create the two intricately detailed models was an uphill struggle. JTF-2 is notoriously secretive and gives out virtually no information about its commandos and their equipment, even to other soldiers.

"There wasn't a lot to go on. We had to work from the few little pictures that are out there," he said. "But the end result is wonderful. When I first saw them, I was just flabbergasted."

Lieut. Moniz said the full-sized JTF-2 soldiers are aware of the new action figures, but was quick to add: "The unit had no involvement in producing them." ''

The article is slightly incorrect.  You can get the 12 inch action figures (they are NOT dolls) of Canadians.  World War Two era, but there is a thriving hobby community out there for this.  I am NOT a member, but I do have three action figures: all German (Fallschirmjäger, Landser and a Waffen-SS guy).  The detail is terrific.  My friend, however, has enough to form up his own company on parade!  If I find his URL, I'll post a link (I think he has a Canadian soldier).

VonGarvin:  In addition to the interest this generates for me re:  the military, it also intrigues me with respect to what individual people do to fuel their passions.  Thanks for the extra info!

There was a company (I can't remember which one) that made a GI Joe sized JTF two figure. It was part of a series they did, and had SAS, GIGN, GSG-9, and some others.

I gave a JTF-2 one to a buddy years ago as a joke.

The sad thing is that it is going to be almost exclusively grown men that buy these things.  Yuk.  Kind of a sad species to belong to when you think about it...  how do we ever get laid???

The link to the article is as above.  I'm glad the webmaster spelled my name right. :)

No collection could be complete without a Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey 12" motivational figure.  Got one myself.

Do you get frequent nose bleeds?  You must, because the moral and intellectual high ground soap box you stand on every time you post here is incredibly high.  Why not descend to earth and mingle with the great unwashed for a while, learn a little humility?

We need a "tess" action figure...

I've seen the life size model at the museum and I want one for myself.

I have a few of these "action figures",  my wife calls them "dolls".  I'm secure in my masculinity, no really I am.

Are you looking for a flame war? Because your post is pure trolling. This is your only warning to cease that sort of behavior.

When I first read his comment I thought, ok, its a joke, similar to what I would make.

Then someone got upsest.  Then a Mod jumped in and labelled it trolling.

Now, social justice side of me said..  is this right??

So I went through the posts of Guess.  You really are someone who likes to stir the pot, aren't you.
Now that's ok because so am I, however, there's a way to play game around here and you've been
hitting a few bricks walls because you're not playing by the rules.  Stop being so arrogant and righteous
and even insulting in your posts and disagree with some good facts instead of .. I don't know how to
describe what I read of your posts.

Sorry.. I hi-jacked the thread.  I'm a bad man.  Don't Verbal me, I'll just go to the confessional
and speak to a Chaplain. ::)

No worries Padre,

Throw in a pair of mismatched CF woll socks (with different colour stripes on the toes) and a pair
of the old green CF boxers.. and I'm there.

(apparently, in my Senators thong if they win!?!? :-[)
Stupid tampa bay for losing...

I know the feeling, my wife refers to my highly detailed, expensive and assembled and painted with love wargaming minatures as "my toys."

Well at least we'll be able to recognise you. BTW Padre I wouldn't let a certain former BGen and sometimes lurker here catch you in mismatched socks, it might give him an aneurysm. Then again you were a medic so I guess that would be ok. 8)
