When responding to a person hit by a subway train, request third rail power removal through the Dispatcher.
Before entering the road bed, proceed to the nearest blue light emergency power removal box at the end of the platform to secure power locally.. You and your partner both. Don't take anyone's word for it.
Even if the trains lights are out. That's not a reliable indicator third rail power has been removed.
The third rail is energized at 660 volts DC, and should always be treated as energized. That includes the cover and contact shoes.
Even if third rail power is off, certain components of the trains undercarriage electrical system my still carry voltage.
Unexpected train movement, unplanned restoration of power, and panic reactions must always be anticipated.
