Hello everyone, I'm doing a project on peacekeeping more specifically the goings on of teh balkans. Something I was curious about and havn't been able to find a straight answer is; What is yugoslavia? Are Bosnia Croatia and Serbia like "states" forming Yugoslavia? or am I completely off?

Yugoslavia no longer exists; hence the term 'former Yugoslavia"....

First of..you're right on about Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia formally being states of Yugislavia...theres a good starting point ;)

"All of the nations that compose the Former Yugoslavia are miserable, hateful little republics bent on each other's destruction and their own pre-eminence over each other. Peacekeeping within them will preserve the status quo until the UN troops leave, at which point they will return to butchering each other within a few years."
also: "These nations are bastions of the most ill-smelling, lazy, misogynistic, alcohol-dependent, criminally-minded dirt-bags outside of the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club." You may also quote me.

Look up the Dayton Peace Accord's.

This link is a good place to start.

Some of us here are a little bitter and twisted about our times in the Balkans - well alot - there are a few decent books out there written about the wars there, and not by locals.

Hey Mandal, do it on Afghanistan instead, the people are hardy, stoic, uncomplaining and honourable.  For the most part.

"peacekeeping sucks *** "

You can quote me on that !!

Remember the REAL reason for UNFICYP in Cyprus: Greece and Turkey were key members on NATO's southern flank.  Turkey had 12 Divisions along it's border with Russia.  Both Greece and Turkey had strategically placed airbases to cover the Med and Black seas.  The mission was to kep the peace within NATO and the pressure on the USSR.  Waving to peasants in mountain villages in Cyprus was a mere by product.  Notice how soon we left when the cold war ended?

I had a big long rant on "Peacekeeping" somewhere, explaining how the over-whelming majority of soldiers I know feel about the term. Poke around for it. It would actually help your project to know how we feel about "Peacekeeping", and you could then use the information found on this site to improve your project and possibly edify the militarily-uneducated.

It's nothing to be embarrassed over. We just depise the term. But most of the population are unaware of this. Do some Searches. Edjicate yerself.
