The question is...where is good to buy in Ontario?

We have 4 kids (another on the way). A dog that needs a big backyard and access to the countryside.
Employment for my fiancee is not a problem. Me, if I get into the CF, figure anywhere in ON as long as family are closer than a 4 hour flight away!

We have looked at Brockville, Kingston, Bellville (sp?)...so anyone got any insights, pro's and con's, etc.

We are looking to sell up here and move out in the summer once school is done.

Thanks.

RT  :salute:

Why Ontario?  Taxes are lower in Alberta, and lots or rural.

If you get in the CF, why move now?

Tom

I live in Addison, which is in between Brockville and Smith Falls on the 29 highway...decent prices and lots of room. An easy commute to Ottawa or Kingston.

Not sure what your circumstances are but if you want a good bourgeois burg ( and I mean in that in the best sense of the word) to raise the kids then try London Ontario. Several strong reserve units in the area. Good schools, reasonable property taxes, low crime, good location, not too dull but not too exciting either.

cheers, mdh  ;)

Only problem with alberta is that property is very expensive. Atleast it is in the Edmonton area.

Agreed, As I am quasi-looking here.   Wainwright is almost as expensive as well, due to the increase at CMTC.

But, lots of other places out in the sticks can't be too bad.

Still, if he is going regular, why move NOW?

Once trained and posted, the CF will pay to move his family.

Tom

i would say the Barrie area. it is a nice city of about 100,000 people and it is about 30 minutes from CFB Bordon. the property is not really that expensive and you can swim in all the lakes around you. it is one of the best places to raise children in Ontario.

remember to stay for away from Toronto. i live in toronto and this city is not a place where you want your kids to go to school or be brought up.

You could also look further south into the golden horseshoe, around Fenwick or Font Hill area, beautiful land, close to 3 reserve regiments with a fourth opening in Welland in the next year or so, also not TOO far a drive from London or the Toronto area and other bases. Land is relatively cheap compare to many places also with large lots availible.

Check it out!

Joe

PS> Good thing about living in one of the smaller communities off the beaten path is that your only a 20 minute drive from any large city centre with everything you need, but you still have the "country" life in your backyard and with your land.

Couldn't find ADDISON on mls.ca (house finding site)!!

Again, the question begs, why not wait until you get in, and let the CF move you?

Shrug. He's gonna do what he's gonna do, it's a free country except for property, which is apparently theft. Another shrug.

Okay Tom here goes...

the reason we are thinking of moving is b/c my wife-to-be (being a Brit like me) absolutely hates boring BC and has been offered work in Ontario earlier than thew end of basic (if I start BOTC in the late Fall/early Winter). It's just a thought at this point. I know the CF would move us but it's all a matter of timing unfortunately.

Oh and I did find Addison...had to find the county first! LOL

:warstory:

IF ur buyin a house try to buy kinda far from the city its less out there u dont have to pay as much taxes, or even better go out east there really cheap out there! and the smell of the ocean just lightens ya lol

"and has been offered work in Ontario earlier than thew end of basic "

Right!  Okay!  It's all clear to me now.  Take the job offered now, natch.  A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Good luck.  Keep us posted.

Tom

i would say Muskoka. that is a nice area. you can get a nice size house on a lake for a decent price.

And affordable, too, if you rob every bank you pass driving in from BC.

Tom

the houses on the lakes there range from 250,000 to 2,000,000 dollars. i have a feeling you wont want to spend that much. those are the finished houses with docks and cleared beaches at the house.

or you could go buy a house that is litrally a 2-5 minute walk away from the lake and the beach for sometimes even under 100,000. usually you would be looking at 150,000. it is not bad though.

i had a house in Huntsville muskoka. it had a basement middle floor and a upstairs. there was 1 bathroom, 4 bedrooms, large living room kitchen dinning room, and a finished basement. there was a fair size front yard and a large backyard plus a garage. there was also forest behind the house. it sold for under $100,000. we were a 5 minute walk away from a beach and a lot of other things. we were asking like 119,000 but it was on the market for over a year and we had started school in toronto so when we got the best offer that was available we took it.

it all depends on what you are looking for in your house.

Now if his wife works in Toronto, how long a commute is that?   3 hours up/down Hwy 400 in Rush Hour?

Our Camp is up between Kirkland Lake and Noranda, and the line ups on Highway 11 to Toronto start in New Liskeard on long weekends.

;D

who said his wife worked in toronto?

um it has never taken me 3 hours to get from toronto to Huntsville before. except when the traffic on the highway is like stopped. i go there several times a year. it takes 2- 2and a half hours. at the most.

i was just giving some suggestions.

when i first moved up north it was to a town called sundridge. that is about 3 hours north of toronto. my dad still had his job in toronto. he would have to work in toronto on the week days and come home on the weekends. not the life you would ever want for a family. but it was only temporary until he found a job in Huntsville. than it was only a 45 minute drive there and back every day.
