Good day gents,

Please redirect this thread if i have posted in the wrong spot.

I have a question about the Vice Regal Salute in Canada.  Can this (or a version of) be played by a pipe and drum band ? My Cadet Squadron is about to play for the Lt Gov of Ontario this weekend and we have been asked to provide the Vice Regal salute, however, i was under the impression that this was strictly a Mil band type piece ?

I believe we will be the only band in attendance when he arrives, is their an appropriate equivalency that could be performed instead ?

Your help, experience and insight would be most welcome.

Cheers,

PV

From the 48th Highlanders Pipes and Drums (unofficial) site:

http://regimentalpipers.com/48pd/facts/tunes.html

General Salute: Loch Leven Castle
Royal Salute: Malorca (1st part once)
Vice Regal Salute: Malorca (pick up, last 4 bars, & two bars of O' Canada)

Yes, i also came across that site.  I couldn't find any reference to Malorca actually being a pipe piece as the 48th also has a Mil band...

In that case, I stand corrected.

May I suggest you try consulting this contact for the official answer: http://www.gg.ca/document.aspx?id=325

Michael,

You could be absolutely right, i just can't find anything more specific than what we have discussed so far even on the GG site.  Thanks for your help, i'll stand by to see if anyone else can weigh in on this.

cheers

Here's a good website -

http://www.canadianscottishregiment.ca/index.php?LIMIT=

Midi files of all of their marches are there, plus pdfs of the music.

I admit that I haven't heard the Vice Regal Salute played by a pipe band.  But I have heard the General Salute (often) that is there.

The description of the Vice Regal Salute is the same (Mallorca, 4 bars, plus two bars of O Canada) but the midi file just plays Mallorca, not O Canada.

The DHH site used to have the marches listed, (here: http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh-dhp/musi/index-eng.asp but the link is broken now.  The other suggestion I have is to contact the local Reg F band. Even if it is brass and reed, they would know these things, they deal with them every day.  I needed recordings of marches for a mess dinner once, and the Reg F band near me was a great help. (And I say RegF because some Reserve bands have quirks that they've done for years, without realizing it's not 100% correct.  Not to say they won't have the right answer.  Mind you, the C Scot R page looks pretty switched on).

Edited to add - Another good source would likely be the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa Pipes and Drums.  I imagine they have some experience with the whole ceremonial thing!  http://www.camerons.ca/Org_Pipes_Drums.html

Mallorca is certainly a bagpipe song, or has at least been adapted to the pipes.  It is usually played by a single piper, with no drum accompaniment. When I get home, I can scan the music and send it to you.

Wait out!

Ok, attached is a .gif of the Music.  I am going to type it in to Bagpipe Player now, but this should do for the time being.  The MIDI on the CSCOT page is accurate.

Good Luck.
