It‘s interesting to hear people mentioning that they feel Cadets are
becoming too easy.
Now, I‘ve never been a Cadet, and I‘ve never been involved in the
Cadet system, but I have been a Girl Guide and a Guide leader. One
of the reasons I stopped being a Guide leader was because I felt that
it was becoming too easy, and no longer teaching the girls useful,
valuable skills. From what I‘ve heard it seems that other youth
groups ie. Cadets are also falling prey to this.
When I was a Brownie ages 5-8 we slept outside in tents when we
went camping with an adult in each tent with 4 girls and we used
outhouses. Nowadays, we can‘t subject the girls to that kind of
hardship - they need cabins with beds and flush toilets. Please! If
we could deal with rougher conditions, why can‘t kids today deal with
them?
Girl Guides taught me many valuable things that I could have also
learned in Cadets. My Guide company did drill. We had inspection,
and your uniform had to be spotless and correctly arranged. We
learned correct colour party procedure for raising and lowering our
flag. We learned valuable leadership skills.
I learned outdoor survival skills, wilderness camping, hiking,
backpacking and orienteering. Was it in a military setting? No, but
it was in a structured setting. We played capture the flag and
paintball. And we loved it.
So, some of the skills that Cadets teach young people can be learned
elsewhere. Not all of them, I grant you. And as I said, one of the
reasons I left is that I felt things were becoming too easy. Still,
I am proud of what I achieved as a member of the Guiding movement.
I think any youth organization, be it Cadets, Guides, or Scouts, can
teach young people valuable skills. It‘s too bad that it seems these
organizations are becoming ‘softer‘ and less disciplined.
