Personally, I love this gun

http://www.geocities.com/weaponsoftheaustralianarmy/aug20b.gif
The F88 Steyr fires 5.56mm x 45mm rounds and is a semi and fully automatic assault rifle issued to Australian soldiers. One characteristic of the Steyr which sets it apart from most other rifles is that most of its butt group and magazine are made from a high strength plastic. This saves weight and assists maintainability.

The Steyr is fed by a high strength plastic magazine which holds 30 rounds.
The see through magazine means you can with a glance see how much ammo you have left, a nifty feature.
Tested in mud, water, and sand and still fires just fine, sound like the AK?

"It also has been fired at temperatures of -46c to 52c.The Steyr can be fitted with three kinds of bayonets, a blank firing attachment, left hand bolt head and special sights. There are three versions of the Steyr."

"The F88 which is the standard rifle. The F88c which is the carbine and has a ten centimetre shorter barrel. and the F88S which accepts a variety of sights such as night vision."

QUOTED FROM http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-weapons/allied_recent.htm

PERSONALLY, I think Canada could use this gun, I mean it was made famous by a bloody video game called Counter Strike but its still a really durable reliable firearm.  Can stand up to the C7A1 at least.

ANYONE ELSE LIKE THIS WEAPON?

Other than what you've read, what is your personal experience with this weapon?

I am not the original poster but in '96 I had a chance to play with a few of these that belonged to the austrian army. They were kind of cool.

My dad is from autralia and he has one.  Retail they are about $$500  Unfortunatly its only a resin copy of the real one.  Accurate in that its the same weight design and make, it just does not fire.  Thats why I avoided putting and information on its fire capabitly becasue I honestly ho not know.  All i know its that its very light, feel very nice to hold, and the see through mag. is a fantastic idea.  Because i assume that in the past a LOT of lives have been lost due to not knowing how much ammunition you have left, i would just feel better knowing lol.  The Aussies use is as their primmary support weapon same as our C7A1....i just think that they have a slightly better gun.   If I'm mistakes please correct me I'm open for correction lol

PS.....is your quote not from Futurama? lmao

C7A1 is not a primary support weapon it is a primary service weapon.

Yeah it is (the quote).

Kyle, what we value around here is practical experience. In exchanges on mechanical subject ( weapons, vehicles, etc) hands on operation is accepted for basing an opinion. Reading about it, playing with it in video games, watching it in movies, doing airsoft, etc is not. Go ahead and ask questions and get involved in the conversation, but making statments about equipment you haven't used will get you in trouble here, and in the other equipment subjects you've posted in. Some other potential problems you're already having, or heading for, on the site, can be solved by thoroughly reading the ' Conduct Guidelines' - http://forums.army.ca/forums/index.php?board=9.0. Please take some time to review those before continuing with your posting. Here's some to get you started.

Hi Kyle, thanks for your enthusiasm on the F88.

Its not the cats whiskers however, and after carrying for almost 13 years, in both peacetime training, adn on operations in Iraq, I personally find its only good advantage is its overall size, with the bull-pup design. Another positive is its easily converted to right of left hand shooting, also the idea of it being modular, which is great for being repaired quickly, and easily. The F88 and F88S, and F88C, are being preplaced by the F88SA1 and F88SA1C, and updated version with a rail system for different optics. The rifle shouild be around at least for another 15 years.

Some other negitives include no NATO mag interchangability, and the weapon cannnot be submersed in water. Australia has also over engineered the rifle, making it a technical nightmare to inspect.

All Australian SF units like the SASR anad Commandso, don't even use it, for them the standard in the Colt M4.

As for the CF using this, I am sure they'll steer clear of this technical nightmare! However in good news, the semi automatic version of this rifle cvan be owned in Canada, but its grandfathered, if you did not own it pre 1992, you'll never be able to have one.

Regards,

Wes

I personally did not enjoy all the shock & vibration that went along with having only a layer of plastic between my cheek & the breach during firing.  Overall, I found the weapon awkward & unpleasant to work with ... but that does have a lot to do with my having very little experience with bullpups.
