The Royal Navy will lose 12 ships, including three Type 42 destroyers HMS Cardiff , Newcastle and Glasgow and three Type 23 frigates HMS Norfolk , Marlborough and Grafton . The number of nuclear attack submarines will drop from 11 to eight.
The Type 42s were on their way out anyways with Cardiff and Newcastle due to go in 2007 and Glasgow in 2009.
The Type 23s are a surprise though Norfolk was commissioned 14 years ago, Marlbourough 13 years ago and Grafton only 7 years ago. These 3 ships are very capable frigates equal to our CPFs. Whoever picks these up from the Brits will have quite a nice little frigate squadron added to their navy.
I also wonder how the reduction of SSNs will affect the Astute purchase?
