Sapper is a term used to refer to miners, although I don‘t know how they received that nickname. When military engineering grew to prominence during the first war,
many miners were recruited into the corps of engineers, to carry on their work beneath enemy lines. The nickname has come to refer to military engineers, but particularliy to the rank of private in the engineers. Likewise "gunner" in the artillery, "trooper" in the armoured corps etc.
