Sniper Inquiry

No worries this is not a post on how to become a sniper or that I want to be one. I have done alot of searching on this forum and have found plenty of answers to what it takes to become a sniper, or the training and the odds of even becoming one.

However, my question is what exactly does a sniper do? I mean are they given specific targets to "take out"? Do they just stand by with scopes  I just don't want to assume they are the hitmen of the CF lol. So can anyone give me maybe an idea of what a sniper may be sent out to do ? ???

I read somewhere on this site that they can be used for security, support, recon, I'm sure they have a number of other support and special roles.
