I got a phone call from an old coworker of mine, who remembered I'd been in the army. She was phoning to see if I knew of someone that was in Afghanistan right now. I told her I didn't, but she told me the reason for her call anyway.
Her son attends a small school in a community about an hour outside Edmonton. His class (grade 3 I think) had seen a video a while back of children in the Kandahar area playing soccer. Instead of a ball they were kicking around an old cloth bag filled with rags. The kids in the class thought maybe they could do something for their peers in Afghanistan, and raised a hundred dollars to buy soccer balls for Afghan kids. A local sport store has matched their donation. The money translated to 6 balls, and the CF has offered to transport them over to Kandahar, but they need the name of a soldier over there who will accept the soccer balls.
I'm not sure how they would be distributed to the schools on that side, but what the teacher at the school is looking for is an email address of a soldier who would be willing to talk, and potentially receive the soccer balls in Kandahar. If you are in the sandbox now, and feel up to doing this, PM me with your email addy and I'll pass it along. If you're in Canada, but know someone who might be willing to do it, perhaps you can check with them and send me their email address.
Many thanks.
