Taliban leader caught in a burqa
A senior Taliban commander has been captured by Afghan troops in the southern province of Kandahar as he tried to escape a Nato manhunt disguised as a woman in a burqa.
The man was identified by Nato on Wednesday as Mullah Mahmood and described as an "extremist commander and suicide attack facilitator" for the province.Soldiers at a checkpoint in the area "spotted the oddity" on Tuesday when the man identified as Mahmood tried to pass them hidden under the garment, which has a grille over the face, the International Security Assistance Force said in a statement.

Actually the disguise would have worked,  but  for the fact Buddy-Boy hadn't shaved his beard, and was prominently sticking out through the grill works of the Burqa. ;D

Keep this thread on track. If you want to denigrate an entire religion or culture, this is not the forum for it and doing so is in contravention of the forum guidelines; and I will place you on the warning ladder.

This is a matter of insurgents and Taliban preying upon our respecting of their cultural values in an attempt to escape & evade. It is in no way a reflection upon the entire culture or religion, and I'm quite sure this disguise is nothing new...he just happened to get caught.

That said - this tactic is centuries old. The difference here, is that NATO, and Canada in particular doesn't want to inflame local hatreds by searching women.

I wonder if thermal imaging would work? Give you the ability to tell gender without physically touching them.

Good point. Canadian soldiers are famous for their ability to respect the local culture and customs while deployed; ie winning hearts & minds of the average local populace. It is what made us great peacekeepers back in the day. Thermal imaging may indeed be able to assist in seperating the men from the women, but I'm pretty sure that the average Muslim would find this itself quite offensive (especially the women). Much like if you told the average Canadian that they would be body scanned entering an airport etc, good for securities sake, but offensive to most.

It's a tough line to straddle.

Well unless you are able to have enough woman around to search, you might have to, but do it discreetly and also do a media blitz (Afghan style that is) telling people why you are intruding on them.
