The U.S. ‘Veteran’ Who Tried to Launch a Coup

Papa Faal says he was in the American military before he tried to knock off the government
of Gambia. And he claims other U.S. veterans joined in the plot.A reported U.S. Army veteran
and a Texas businessman appeared in federal court Monday charged with a most unusual crime:
plotting to overthrow the West African government of Gambia. And there may have been more
Americans—and possibly more American veterans—involved, based on statements given to an
FBI agent by Papa Faal, the vet whose alleged role in the plot involved smuggling weapons
into Gambia.

“Most, if not all, members of the group had served in the U.S. or Gambian military,” Faal told
FBI agent Nicholas Marshall, according to an affidavit. While Faal appeared in a Minnesota
courtroom, his alleged co-conspirator, Gambian-American Cherno Njie, stood before a Baltimore
judge. The two had been working together since August, but Faal may have only recently learned
the name of Njie, the would-be ruler of Gambia.

“The members of the group were known to each other by code names,” Marshall’s affidavit noted.
Faal’s code name was “Fox.” “Faal also reportedly served in both the United States Air Force and
the United States Army” before being discharged in 2012, according to the FBI document, which
provided no other details on his service.

US charges over Gambia 'coup plot' against Yahya Jammeh

Two men have been charged in the US with attempting to overthrow The Gambia's
President Yahya Jammeh, the justice department has said. The defendants, who are
of Gambian origin, are accused of conspiring against a friendly nation and conspiring
to possess firearms.

Gambian authorities said they had thwarted a coup attempt on 30 December.
...
Weapons, including M4 semi-automatic rifles and other military equipment,
were last year shipped to The Gambia for use in the attempted coup,
US officials allege.
...
The Gambia's pro-opposition Freedom newspaper reported last week that at
least four of the coup-plotters had been killed, including Lamin Sanneh, a
former head of the presidential guard who was living in exile in the US,
but this has not been confirmed.
