Saw a poster on campus today at U of Guelph advertising another 'Troops Out Now' protest in downtown Guelph tomorrow (Oct 18th). Thought I would let you folks know in case anyone felt like dropping by to express their views. I may, if I find time between the gym and a potluck dinner we're having tomorrow.

Maybe we'll get to see Bruce on CTV again.  ;)

Here's the advertisment promoting tomorrow events Canada-wide. I wonder if these idiots will ever give up.

Is that the name of the org arranging it or the name of their current project?

Working an overtime night shift tonight.........doubt I'll be there to do the good-lookin' TV sound bite this time. :king:

However......one never knows.

boo to not being in close enough proximity to that - I love expressing my views.

Because we all know how peaceful the Marxist-Leninists have been since 1917.  :threat:

They had a rally attendance sign up sheet at the University Center - I left some choice words for them.

....Okay, it was more like a paragraph and I might have filled up their little sheet.

Darn.

Guess no one will be able to sign up for the rally. >:D

I'm on campus tomorrow writing papers, and I'll be sure to turn out to watch their meager procession - maybe even heckle, who knows.  I love their posters.. "Bring Canadian Troops Home Now!!!" over the picture of an American soldier.  Fools.

Do they not see the irony in this:

They just don't get it, do they? I'm debating going to this, just to see what kinda of propaganda bullcrap they are spewing.

I found this in the second paragraph of that website, "The war violates the UN Charter and international law and no amount of justifications change this fact."

Last time I checked ISAF was established by a resolution (1386) of the UN Security Council. Maybe someone should clear that up for them so they can stop wasting everybody's time.

I suppose there are reasons to protest any war, but I don't think this argument works here.

I think it's quite possible that they don't know how to read ... ;D

For those who intend to participate... I encourage you to take from a salesman play book. Calm, cool, collected and intelligent arguements, backed with facts (ie, be able to rhyme off the source of your verifiable facts) will always win the day against these screeching sophmores. Speak in the positive voice, never negative or permissive. If you do not know it as fact, do not touch it.

They will come armed with talking points, which will either be inaccuracies, or blatent misinformation (lies). Fortunately, they often post these talking points on their various webpages, so that one could be pre-armed with researched, and accurate facts to counter.

Never allow yourself to get into a screaming match... They already look like idiots, so they are comfortable with it. Do NOT allow yourselves to be dragged down to their level, and then beaten by their expereince in being a screeching ignorant lunatic.

Rationale human beings allow for a real discussion... These events do not usually attract the rationale ones though.

EDIT FOR SOME SPELLING. (Back to work with me)

Well, for all 25 of them that turned out - they certainy made themselves look silly.

"1,2,3,4 We Don't Want Steve Harper's War!"

Haha - because Mr. Harper put us there.  Right  ::)

Considering the incredibly weak show of strength they made (walking on the sidewalk, and not in the street.. although I guess there weren't enough of them to actually fill the breadth of a street) I suppose it shows the genuine lack of interest for their cause on the Guelph campus - which I am relatively relieved about.  I may start wearing my uniform to class more often, hearts and minds and all of that.

Just to re-emphasise, 25 out of about 15,000 is a pretty weak turnout - maybe next year support will soar to a full 0.2% of the student population.

That website is brilliant, and I'll be ordering a copy of their book for Christmas reading!  :salute:

ROFL nice page Tess. Got a good lil belly laugh going on some of the pics. Like I said, they are comfortable with being idiots.

Guelph is a fairly politically-neutered campus. No one seems to care beyond a vocal minority. And re: the uniform thing (I assume you were at the SEM meeting) you may have noticed some of us quietly laughing at that suggestion. There's no problem telling people you are a CF member, but as soon as that uniform comes on people know they can heckle, harrass and abuse you as much as they want and you can't do a darn thing except walk away. Wearing it to class won't do anything except make you a target (sad as that is).

This is a more sensible approach.

Regrettebly it is. Now, I would say wear it on Canadian Forces Day, as that is a more legitimate 'excuse' to do it, you can explain to people why you are wearing it etc. But, CF Day falls outside of the school year so its a moot point.

Wearing it to class once a week (which was the request, although not mandatory, made by those higher up in the SEM chain) will just garner some unwanted attention. And honestly, there are some people who need to be inspected before they go out in public in uniform, since they look like they rolled out of bed wearing it, and if this 'policy' does not allow for having more the more senior ROTP types on campus give a uniform inspection before they go out in public.

If you really want to 'wear your job', go buy a Canadian Army t-shirt or something and wear that to class. It's a little more low-key.

After working with the Ceremonial Guard for the summer, I'm not too worried about having a squared away uniform.  ;)

I'm not sure I follow your logic as to needing an excuse to wear my uniform to class.  I've lived on campus the previous two years (South, and then Johnston as a Residence Assistant) and during the course of that time paraded regularly (sometimes upwards of three times a week) with various PRes units in the Guelph/K-W area.  Never once did I receive "unwanted" attention for being in uniform on campus (although I cannot count the times I've received positive attention), and even if I did what would that matter?

A grown man should be able to turn the other cheek, as I am, and an officer should never be cowed into quiet intimidation.  In the course of my time in the PRes I faced greater challenges than the "threat" of some student with too much time on their hands telling me that he doesn't agree with Canadian foreign policy (its his right to do so, after all), and as an officer in the Regular Force I am certain that there will be tougher calls for me to make than "do I walk down this street, or that street?" in the off chance that there might be a mean person on one of the streets.

I'm not seeking to challenge you on this as an officer, I'm sure you're an honourable man too - but I would like to hear you explain your logic behind this a bit further.
