TRURO – A First World War veteran and former Truro resident will be honoured posthumously with the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service.
The award recognizes the deeds of Pte. Jeremiah Jones, for his heroic deeds during the battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917.
Jones, one of 16 black soldiers of the 106th Battalion, Nova Scotia Rifles, assigned to the Royal Canadian Regiment, single-handedly destroyed a German machine gun nest and captured the crew. His grandson Dr. B.A. “Rocky” Jones will accept the award during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Monday at the Royal Canadian Legion in Truro.
Nova Scotia Lt. Gov. Mayann Francis, Defense Minister Peter MacKay RAdm Paul Maddison, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic will preside over the ceremony.
