i have seen many topics on overweight and losing weight while in basic but i have not seen anything about being underweight. Right now i am 180cm (5'11") and 58 kg (128 lbs) and i feel and look a lot smaller than my friends. i know i have left some things out but i can always think of them later. :-\

Are you male or female?  How old are you? Are you in good shape?  How is your upper body strength?

Tom

19 Male, just was finishing profile as you responded. I am not in the best of shape anymore, but still fit.  my upper body strength is so too good 15 push ups until it starts to get hard.

All these threads are stupid. Nobody cares how much you weigh or what you look like or how tall you are. Why would they? This isn't a bloody beauty pagent and no one is interested in your sob story. The only thing that matters is whether you can do the job. If you think you are not fit enough to do the job, don't join until you are. You know the recruiting standards, they are very easy by any objective measure, if you have ANY doubts about passing them, don't join.  If you think you are too tall/fat/short/skinny to do the job, don't join untill you think you are short/tall/fat enough.

The army is not Jenny Craig, we're not here to help you lose weight or to make you feel better about yourself. Think it might be too tough? don't join. We'll get along just fine without any more indecisive whiners.

by no means do I think i am ready to go right this moment. I have already started running and working my stomach upper and cardio. The reason i ask is because i had a friend i used to live with and he was in the reserves. he would come back from a rucksack march and said to me that he was carrying an unhealthy amount of weight for him.

So, he got out, right?

It doesn't matter whether your built like Governor Arnold or Pee-Wee Herman, the kit weighs the same. Male or female, fat or skinny, the ammo, wpns, food, water and parachutes all weigh the same.

I was probably one of the scrawniest guys to put on a set of 51 pattern webbing.  I had to work on my upper body strength to go on a Basic Parachute course, so I did.  Being skinny means you get banged up a lot.  it doesn't have to mean you can't do it.  Lots of guys who should have been able to out-ruck me have crumpled up over the years.  I'm still around, they aren't.

Your call.  Decide, one way or the other.

Tom

The army doesnt ask if your underwieght or overweight. The army asks how much physical activity you do "in a given time frame".  :salute:

Wow that is quite a bit of info to take in (although the links did not work so i found it myself) but it is just what i was looking for  ;D
Now to get started on this and hope my birth certificate will come by spring 06 so i can can apply. thanks for the info all.

I'm about an inch or 2 taller, and about 70 pounds heavier than you. But you know what? You can probably do pushups till the cows come home, as opposed to me... You can also probably run circles round me. Being light does have it's advantages.

Britney,

Although your profile is very cryptic you certainly sound like a seasoned veteran.  I think the question is a very valid one as I (who has 16 years service and three years as a civilian PSO in Baghdad,Mosul,Basra and Kabul) dealt with the same dilemma.  If it were not for positive reinforcement or friends that could "fill me in "  I could not have lasted nor had the confidence in myself to attempt boot camp (and believe me it was very different than it is today)  Subsequently,  because there were people who could give advice and motivate me ...regardless of my size nor my stature I finshed 16 years in the military, a jump course and ultimately I am in a field of work that I love and think that you would fail at miserably.......just because of your attitude.

Is your profile correct...are you a civilian?  Female?  Or are you blogging to piss people off

Nice to meet you too. So enlighten me, if you will; what exactly were the heigh, weight, and bust/cup size requirements when you joined? There were no such requirements when I joined, but that wasn't 16 years ago, and I'll freely admit that it may have been different back then.

"....and bust/cup size requirements...."

- Nice to see the recruiting mafia are finally listening to some of my sugestions.... ;D

Tom

I should clarify that last part, it's a little ambiguous. By "back then", I meant back during  DFW2T's days, 16 years ago. I wasn't implying that I had more(than 16 years) time in than him (I don't, not by a long shot).

Why, I bet they didn't even HAVE the internet 16 years ago......

"Why, I bet they didn't even HAVE the internet 16 years ago......"

- They did, I didn't.  :D

-Trolling, aren't you?

Tom

heck if I knew, 16 years ago I was barely potty trained.

So the memory's a little hazy. :)

"16 years ago I was barely potty trained."

- I was a slow learner as well.  ;)

-But, back to the matter at hand - scrawny soldiers - all are correct who stated we are task oriented not shape oriented.  So, go for it.  Or not.  But, make a decision.

Tom

to you wannabe's who are thinking of enlisting...
overweight, underweight, or juuuust right, it's all irrelevent to the CF! Suck it up, and do it. You may regret it later, you may not. But, I guarantee you would always regret not trying. If it were easy, anybody could do it, and it wouldn't be worth doing, would it?
It ain't about weight, height, hair colour, or fashion sense! It's about guttin' out the hard stuff, and overcoming whatever gets thrown at you. It's about making your nation safe and protecting the helpless by killin' dirtbags. Either you got the parts, or you don't. And there's only one way you'll know.
Your call.

But do you have 16 years in the army and a jump course? Because otherwise you better watch yourself......  :D
