I came across this little article from The News, International, (Pakistan edition), on a Pakistan mil site.

US yearns for Pak capitulation
Saturday, March 08, 2008
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has given them bases and logistic support as well as intelligence sharing but what the US is now demanding from Islamabad has shocked the Defence and Foreign Ministries and the initial reaction has been a rejection of what are highly intrusive demands for the US military and auxiliary personnel in Pakistan.

the rest here..

The implication is a directed move by US to have more flexibility in their personnel’s arrival, departure and what they do with in the sovereign state of Pakistan. With this news article hitting the streets of Islamabad I can see a lot of happy Pakistani people just loving the US.
With an anti US feeling running through the new elected parties I doubt this will encourage friendly feelings.

The article is crap.

first demand is for granting of a status that is accorded to the technical and administrative staff of the US embassy

The second demand is that these personnel be allowed to enter and exit Pakistan on mere National Identification (for example a driving licence) that is without any visas

US is demanding that Pakistan accept the legality of all US licences, which would include arms licences.

US criminal jurisdiction be applicable in Pakistan to US nationals

exemption from all taxes, including indirect taxes like excise duty, etc

seventh demand is for inspection-free import and export of all goods and materials.

eight is the demand for free movement of vehicles, vessels including aircraft, without landing or parking fees!

number nine, there is a specific demand that selected US contractors should also be exempted from tax payments.

number ten there is the demand for free of cost use of US telecommunication systems and using all necessary radio spectrum

eleven is for a waiver of all claims to damage to loss or destruction of others’ property, or death to personnel or armed forces or civilians.

My point being that whether the article is a pile of bull faeces or fact is immaterial.
The issue is more to do with it being in the news there, Pakistan, and its resulting reaction by the populous.

From your comments tomahawk6 are these real demands or are they included in the crap bit?

Not arguing with you here just looking for some level of clarification on the whole thing. I have not seen it elsewhere, but I gather our papers, OZ, are a bit slow on some things. US papers may be running this I don’t know.

I just pulled out the so called demands from the article. Compared to the article's title you would have thought the US was going to takeover Pakistan. Some of these requests are minor and all seem to apply to US embassy personnel. In a country where everyone has weapons, complaining about US weapons permits is absurd. The US operates in over 120 countries and in most cases we abide by local laws.Where we have large military garrisons our troops operate under status of forces agreements. Soldiers that commit crimes have done time in Korean or Japanese prisons. As we have seen in the UK and Italy judges play political games with the law and SOFA's act to protect troops.Another reason we didnt sign on to the ICC.
