Just a few questions regarding the practice of dropping rank (say from Sgt. to MCpl) in order to qualify for a tasking.

Has anyone here done this, or thought about it?

What are the effects of doing so (besides then qualifying for the task)?

What unofficial effect did it have (cold shoulders, opinions about professionalism etc.)?

In general what has been your experience, with this practice?

A few years ago you used to be able to request a reversion in rank with no career consequences (on paper).  This was taken out when the regulation allowing for refusal of promotion was implemented.  So as far as the reg force goes, it would have to be something that would be worked out between yourself, your bosses, and the career shop.  In the reserves I know of at least one case where a reserve CWO worked as Sgt during the day on a Class C call out (few years ago).  I think my wife mentioned just mentioned someone who left the regs one day and came back to the same unit the next as reservist at a lower rank.  So there are ways for it to be done.

In which case accepting the promotion would then mean you could not go back by your own choice?  On Paper being the opperative words there too.

More of what I was getting at.  For a Reservist to go on a tasking available as a lower rank than they currently hold.

Certainly is the case going the other direction.  Reservist time in doesn't count 1-to-1 for days worked, therefore their rank is often reduced, although they will be paid the same (moeny, not pay category), until they catch up in rank.
