I am looking for some ideas. Maybe you can help.
I have spent the last week writing down some ideas on how the business sector (mine included) can help our soldiers, sailors and airmen. The thought is way overdue, I know, but today I realized that Army.ca, which I have visited on an ongoing basis for a long time, might be in a position to offer suggestions.
I will be vague about what I do for a living, the reason being that I don't want to be perceived as looking for any self-promotion out of this. Suffice it to say that our business has a substantial base of employees and has some informal links with the reserves. Some of what we offer to the public might be of assistance to military families.
The first thing I have thought of is the need to adopt a reserve-friendly employee policy so as to encourage our employees to become or to remain involved in the reserves, and to be friendly to employees who are part of a permanent force family. I have reviewed the material online for the Canadian Forces Liaison Council It is a start, but do any of you know of policies like this that are in existence so I can see some of the issues that employers have considered?
The second thing I have thought about is making some or all of our services available on a reduced fee basis (ie recover expenses only) to military families, where a member is deploying out of province - ie Afghanistan, other NATO commitments, service in the Kingston class vessels etc. Is it something that would help or would it be seen as opportunistic? Is it rational to differentiate on the basis of deployment?
Third, how do we get the word out to the community without looking like we are advertising for business? We have plenty to do, and the idea would just be to help where we can.
Every comment and suggestion is most appreciated.
Cheers.
