What is Cougar Salvo?

The COUGAR SALVO series of exercises are brigade concentrations which descend from the old Pacific Mil Area HQ (effectively, now 39 CBG HQ) spring break "gun camps".  Budget permitting, they occur annually during March spring break and are usually held in WA state (Ft Lewis and its attached Yakima Firing Center).  Depending on what is mandated in a particular year, the training may be concentrated or dispersed, live or dry (firing), and have different proportions of time devoted to all-arms vs branch-specific training.

(One of the original purposes of "gun camp" was to go somewhere with ranges suitable for more than just small arms in order to complete the qualifications for arty, engr, ADP gunners, MG, etc).

41 Bde had some troops out this year; I just got some pictures from our guys who were on the ex and will be adding an article about it to the www.calgaryhighlanders.com site shortly, as soon as one of the troops finishes typing out his experiences.

As I remember, Cougar Salvo ran in one of two ways:

1.  Word would come out far in advance of the activities CS would entail...Helo insertions on night patrols, live fire jungle lanes, FIBUA, etc...

2.  No word at all what was going to happen until you stepped off the bus...hello to a week of section level ATC with blanks!

And the rain...has to rain for a successful CS.  Enough rain to start growing mushrooms on your back.

Yeah, except this year it looked like everyone got a surprise snowfall because it was held in Kamloops.
