Why so many officers?

why is it that apparently we have wayyy too many officers, yet, in the army website under "jobs" (The Canadian Army-Jobs) it lists Artillary Officer, Civil Engineer (Officer), Communications Engineer (Officer), Armoured Officer, and Infantry Officer listed under "Immediate Vacancy"? I've read in other posts that we have so many officers as to make it plain stupid and that it has reduced the authority and respect that the NCMs have of Officers cuz there are simply too many, and thus higher chances of finding idiotic officers.   :(

You post drivel like that, and you‘re worried about encountering idiotic officers? Oh my....

I don‘t think I‘ll be spending too much more time on this forum. To be brutally honest, the quality and content of the discussions is depressingly lacking. With a handful of exceptions, the level of knowledge and experience demonstrated here is very low. Watching the blind mislead the blind is occasionally humorous, but not particularly stimulating nor rewarding.

No offence, but having lurked and occasionally posted here for the past 6 months or so, I have come to realize that this particular site really doesn‘t provide what I‘m looking for. The post above was by no means offensive or derogatory. It merely demonstrated (yet again) a fundamental lack of understanding about the current state of Canadian Army pers manning.

No offence intended to anyone. It was fun for a while, but I‘m going to spend my on-line time elsewhere.

Regards,

Bartok5 - I can‘t say that I disagree with your evaluation of the board, except to say that it‘s more a condition of the web in general. I would, however, like to know what the **** your post contributed to this discussion, to this board or to anyone‘s life in general.

Perhaps you now feel better for publicly declaring your superiority over the rest of us. Maybe now your online time will be spent in the MENSA forum trying to figure out how to make the world a better place, or more likely you‘ll spend some time jumping from site to site looking for nirvana only to get so frustrated that you throw your computer through the first window you find. Either way, thanks for your contribution. I‘d like the last minute of my life back please.

Punk. :sniper:

well, all the put downs aside, i was actually wondering what the state of our officer core is really like. The DND says that they need officers, thus the immediate vacancy, yet ive heard on here that there are way too many officers. I was simply wondering which one is true. How is this pointless drivil, i could be asking how to make the world a better place i guess...but i still want an answer...
O, and thanks for the productive feedback Bartok.

I agree with McInnes confusion over the amount of officers we have. Everyone hears the stories about how we have more generals in the military today then we did at the height of world war 2. All that aside, from what i‘ve personally seen we have quite a few officers. Maybe though in certian trades like on the web site, we don‘t have enough artillery or engineer officers etc.. but aren‘t we hurting for NCMs just as much, if not more? Why not post immediate vacencies for their positions? I‘ve always wondered where all the officers that RMC turns out go.

Very classy message you left at SOCNET, bragging about leaving this board and how it‘s $hit. I‘m sure the owner appriciates that kind of publicity.

I think the real officer shortage is in trained specialists, like pilots, lawyers, dentists and doctors, who can make much more money civvie-side. It‘s the nature of the beast; military service isn‘t seen as "important" anymore. It used to be that pride in self and country would make up for the difference in salary between a soldier and a civilian. Nowadays, it‘s unfortunately not enough for some.

Sorry McInnes,

I guess I forgot to answer your question, it‘s just that guys like that really piss me off.

Anyway, as I understand it, it‘s not the amount of officers that is the problem, so much as the number of senior officers and the way in which they are promoted. Basically we start off with a handfull of officers trained for the arty, comm, infantry positions etc. and every year a bunch of them get bumped up the chain and moved into offices where they sit on their thumbs. Now these promotions are made ignoring the fact that they are needed in their current positions and there is noting for them to do when they move up. I‘m sure someone has a good explanation for this but since I‘m not an officer I doubt I‘d understand. :p
