Will the Canadian Military collapse?

Simple question I guess. Is it literally possible for the Canadian Military to collapse? If that happened, just if, what do you think would happen? Would all the trained members be sent to Britian or something and put in their Military? Or is it just impossible for a country to not have a military, and if money is a problem...would they just cut all the reservists and keep only reg guys? Later.. :cdn:

I think with the amount of ambivilance that the Canadian government and people have regarding the military, all they would do is complain about the suddenly unemployed 58 000 people. Then, some contractors would make bids on lucrative bids worth more than the defence budget on taking care of surplus equipment and military training lands.

This also brings to mind a quote (though from where I don‘t recall exactly):

"Every country has an army. Theirs or someone elses."

In recent history, their is no record of any civilized nation that did not have a military capability of some sort, either full time, part time, or some one elses. "If" the military collapsed I am sure our southern neighbours would defenitely take notice, and have some suggestion on the matter.

Canada needs a military to enforce its foreign policy (or at least command a little respect internationally). If our military was reduced to merely defending the homeland, our allies in NORAD and NATO would be displeased.

Think of all the trading disputes we‘ve had with the US in the last while- softwood lumber, salmon fisheries and the like. Think of our negotiating position if the US has even less respect for us than they do now.

Canada has developed respect internationally because we talk about peace, and we actually act as if we mean it. If we continue the talk, but eliminate the action, we will lose respect, trade, allies, etc.
