CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

“Because it’s 2025!”

Honesty, this and then Carney and Freeland with their “I’ll cut the carbon tax” and “we won’t implement the capital gains tax increase just yet” should make sentient Canadians wary.

I have yet to hear “we are instituting immediate approvals to support Canadian O&G transportation to tidewater.”

A 25-per-cent U.S. tariff is, however undesirable, very much survivable.

As I have been arguing --- Canada pre-freetrade, worked.
And if GDP did drop it could be recovered by exporting more, and by attracting the investments necessary to get those exports to market.

Nor will the jobs suddenly disappear on Saturday.
Pre FTA, Canada had nowhere near the end user taxation that we have today. If we roll back to 1987, we have to go all the way or collapse completely.

Now it’s march 1st. Maybe.

Trump’s press secretary says report of March 1 tariffs ‘false’; Canadian source says no word
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says reporting indicating U.S. President Donald Trump intends to delay imposing tariffs on Canada until March 1 is “false.”

“I was just with the president in the Oval Office, and I can confirm that tomorrow, the Feb. 1 deadline that President Trump put into place… continues,” she said.

“The president will be implementing tomorrow a 25 per cent tariff on Mexico, 25 per cent tariffs on Canada, and a 10 per cent tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country which has killed tens of millions of Americans. These are promises made and promises kept by the president.”
The moving target keeps moving. Apparently the tariffs are back on for February 1st.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen countless flags, bumper stickers and other visual messages saying “F*CK TRUDEAU”. So where are the comparable “F*CK TRUMP” messages?

Those of us to the left of center have more class.

(as do those to the right of center, who comparatively are not flying Palestinian flags)

The ones that put bumper stickers like eff Trudeau are likely to be on the same political spectrum as Trump supporters would be my guess.

Bingo card- out of left field demands to stave off tariffs now that we've jumped when told to jump:
  • end of dairy supply management
  • Tariff on some/ all non US produced Auto
  • Join in tariff action against Mexico and/or China
  • Major artic control/defense concession (basing, freedom of navigation, etc)
  • Major military purchase(s)

Also, I remember driving through Quebec to the Gaspe in the mid 1970s and lost track of the number of Canadian flags flying upside down. Some had the Quebec flag (of course) but also, in some cases, the American flag both right side up.

Who tf wants to drink american milk?

Also, when gas spikes in the US, because their oil producers rely heavily on heavy crude and it's still cheaper with tariffs than shipping it across the planet, expect there will be a consumer pushback from even the trumpers.

Probably the most plain spoken, down to earth explanation of Trump, tariffs, trudeau, economy and fixes I've heard yet. YMMV.
IMO, these are the kind of people that should be our negotiators. Not politicians ignorant of global finance, trade and negotiation.

I don't.

But I'm pretty convinced that the border stuff is is a just a plausible excuse to test our response on the path to getting what he actually wants.

Probably, but I think the problem is he doesn't actually know what he wants, and seems to change depending on what story he watched last, so it's pretty impossible to satisfy what is essentially a spiteful child in charge of a superpower.
