Political impacts of Ukraine war

Coaxing the deal by threatening both sides.

Like most of the West, Trump underestimates the Russians' penchant for self-destruction. I think he'll be surprised at his naivete, at some point in the not too distant future at any rate...

A relevant snippet from the LPC platform on international partnerships:

“And, if needed, build on our peacekeeping heritage and step up to guarantee Ukraine’s security”

Am I reading this the same as others- Canada as a potential member in a ‘coalition of the willing’ in Ukraine?

We are going to need a much bigger Army…

Just added that little bit there.

In any case, a new mission of any stripe, at this moment, would cripple the Canadian Army. Moreso, our sustainment infrastructure within the CAF would not be able to cope with it either...
Road to 3% and all…

The current mission set is crippling the Army (and Navy). Adding anything else would essentially just be MAID.

The LPC can say what it wants. I have zero faith in them

Meanwhile, OP LENTUS looms on the horizon.

If it's a busy fire year this year it might get interesting ;)

Wildfire preparedness:

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) forecasts indicates that British Columbia may experience an active spring wildfire season due to persistent drought conditions. This activity is expected to increase if there continues to be limited precipitation over the next several weeks and months. Until significant and sustained rains occur, the risk of ignition will remain elevated.

“Every day, the hard-working members of the BC Wildfire Service are preparing for the 2025 wildfire season,” said Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests. “We don’t know what it will bring, but we are putting in the work each and every day to protect our communities. With warmer weather just around the corner, I urge British Columbians to do their part to help protect their homes and communities through our provincial FireSmart program.”

You got to figure at this point a few once’s of prevention should be taken by the province.

Cutting 500m wide firebreaks every 25km or so and a 5km break every 100km with upgrading of road networks and camp facilities to support firefighting activities.

Invest in some SMR’s, and create some artificial lakes off some the current rivers to provide water basins to aid fire fighting efforts.

Get more rotary and fixed wing water bombers.

The Military shouldn’t be a first responder to annual domestic issues.

Everything I've read so far emanating from Europe indicates this is situated in pure permissive peacekeeping. If there's a peace, there will be a peacekeeping force to observe, record, and report. Following the usual template for that, I'd expect the peacekeeping force to robustly get out of the way if the belligerents resume hostilities.

People should stop talking about this as if it is some kind of way to "guarantee Ukraine's security". The only way to do that is to put a force in Ukraine willing and able to meet and defeat Russian forces. For that, Europe and Canada would prefer the US to pay the bills.

Depends who is talking. Some of the European countries are much more ready to put combat units into Ukraine to deter the Russians than others.

Sure. Are they expected to fight? At what point is the butcher's bill expected to dissolve resolve?
