CANSEC 2025

I can live with HIMARS. The Brits and Germans, OTOH, tend to favour LMRS-type systems. The US swings both ways.

If you look at the UKs 1 DRSBCT you'll see Ajax and MLRS. They planned on AS90 (until they gave them away).

Not the issue but I'm a fan of using the same weapon but on a tracked chassis for tracked formations and wheeled for wheeled. MOOG turrets are good for that.

Irrelevant for the time being and I'll wait for the 155 once its out of the glossy brochure state and someone has evaluated its operational use against simpler systems.

🍻

Re 1 DRSBCT

I think the Brits simply cheaped out. Rather than splitting Arty between the CS regiments for the Brigades and the RS regiments for the Division they lumped the two together.

I suspicion that the AJAXs and the AS90s were destined for the Armoured Brigades. The Deep Battle was likely the Light Cavalry and STA Regiments acting as spotters for the Rockets. And, again, budget won out. They had MRLS. It was cheaper to refit the existing tracks than buy new wheels for little tactical advantage.

I suspect that that launcher will become the land bound version of the Mk41 VLS - fitted with every missile know to man.

It actually happened differently.

1 DRSBCT was formed from 1st Artillery Brigade being merged with the 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade both of which were part of 3 (UK) Div.

1 Arty Bde had seemed to change roles with every white paper that came down and for the most part post Cold War was a generalist arty brigade for the army but in 2019 was placed under command of 3 (UK) Div as its divisional arty bde with both CS and GS systems as any other div arty would be although its make up had 5 regular and 4 reserve regiments (which isn't unusual as the reserve regiments generally provide augmentees rather than being mobilized as full regiments. It's the same for the div's current armoured brigades)
I suspicion that the AJAXs and the AS90s were destined for the Armoured Brigades.
The AS90s came from the armoured brigades. The whole refurbish the Warriors, buy Boxer and buy AJAX thing has morphed. The AJAX versions were heavily weighed to the recce version (i.e. Ajax 245) with another allocated to 256 Protected Mobility Recce Support (Athena, Arus and Argus) and another 88 to engineering variants. I think its safe to say that the tracked versions were destined for armoured recce. Boxer became the Warrior IFV replacement.
The Deep Battle was likely the Light Cavalry and STA Regiments acting as spotters for the Rockets.
Yeah kind of. I think that's the theory behind it but I don't quite get the meld although there is a lot of theory behind shortening the kill chain through such a system. Personally I think their might be some overload at the bde HQ but we'll see how things work out. I wouldn't be surprised if eventually this migrates into a Cavalry BCT and an arty bde.
And, again, budget won out. They had MRLS. It was cheaper to refit the existing tracks than buy new wheels for little tactical advantage.
Or they wanted to stay tracked and keep the double launcher cells that MLRS has.

🍻

So how about wheels for GS/LRPF batteries and tracks for CS batteries?

Wheels for the Deep Recce Strike Brigade and tracks for the CS regiments attached to armoured brigades?

Wheels for LOC GBAD?

Wheels for civilian defence GBAD?

Thinking here of reports that there is 155 Anti Aircraft Round.
I don't pretend to be an expert on this, and am unwilling to weigh in as I haven't thought much about these issues. But I will say that tactical mobility and survivability both have to be at the forefront of our decisions if we desire success in war with an over-peer adversary, of which almost all enemies are.

I got ambushed by this guy and his handlers shortly after I walked into the trade floor.

Likely saw the white hair and a bit of bling and thought, "I'm going to get a photo op with a real veteran" I later thought, "Damn it, I'm pretty sure I didn't look like I fought in the Napoleonic Wars"

He gave me the ole' "Thank you for your service" schtick and I took the opportunity to tell him that his government needs to help the CAF to get rid of the pinch points in recruiting and training. "It was in our campaign was his reply" and he and the entourage were gone in a flash.

Damn nice suit, probably cost a couple of months of a mortgage payments.

My mortgage or his?

I have some concerns about the suppressor.
Mainly as I don’t think it’s ideal for the GPF soldier and while it offers some great things, that more in the SOF domain, and the HuxWrx 556k Flow can that was shown earlier is a better option to field for ‘Big’ Army (CA and Big is sort of an oxymoron).

The Strategic Science can is a great option for folks who can replace them if overly heat cycled (will be common in GPF guns), and able to take advantage of the modules to extend the body for green side work, as opposed to urban or confined space applications where the base module works great as a moderator.

Just my $0.02

There will be multiple versions, the suppressor will not be on 100% of the time, in fact the GS variant that most support trades will get will not have one at all.

That is seriously unfortunate. Suppressed weapons are a must in this day and age / the weapon signature of unsuppressed weapons is a death sentence.

i am sure thee is a plan to have them if needed, but i doubt your class A reserve soldier will be shooting CMAR for PWT 2 with a suppressor attached

I thought the suppressor was standard from what I've seen.

We shall see what happens if we actually get budget increases. This is a project they could absolutely sign the contract tomorrow if the money was there to fully fund

Kind of like the policy that supporter/Non-CbtArms got long rifles, not carbines, because carbines aren’t for confined use, they’re for cool dudes (and tankers). 😉

Noah has an article about his visit on the last day of CANSEC with lots and lots of pictures:

Who is this chap? I've read a bunch of his posts, he seems pretty dialed in and well briefed. Is he former military or just an interested civvie?
