AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

I spotted the lead vessel of the JSS basis design from my room on the 8th floor of Juno tower this past weekend. I got the chance to speak to some of the crew. They seemed to be enjoying Halifax. The ship looks to be in very good condition, for a 26 year old vessel.

I imagine they are pleasantly surprised by the very Summer like weather we have been having, not to mention the thousands of University students drinking on the waterfront waiting for the Dal strike to be over.

Apparently the ship just came out of refit. We had sea trainers and Protecteur crew sailing with them for the last month or so.

They also didn't pay to design out the fitted sauna and beer kegs in the mess...

Thanks - that explains the fantastic state of the ship. The German sailors we met did mention they had had some Canadians along for their last sail. Really looking forward to seeing Protecteur at work.

Yup. One of those is my daughter unfortunately. She was the reason we were in Halifax this past weekend. Hoping that strike is resolved soon. A bunch of bored students in dorms combined with partying and alcohol is an explosive combination! :)

Curiosity question, How far out is her crew selected for the sea trails, and her first captain? do you know?
Everyone is already selected except perhaps some of the more Jr. members. Back in 2020 there already was a CO, XO, and HOD's as well as some senior NCO's selected and working a shore office. The current "will take them to sea" CO has been on the job for over a year and sailed with the German version of this ship to learn, as has some of the navigators, engineering and deck dept types.

They have a lot of shore training to do, SOP's to write, know your ship familiarization, assist the contractors with some stuff (professional advice and skills). Activating a ship for the first time has a lot of work that isn't evident. It's like moving into a new house where you need to get all the furniture in, reno's done, addresses changed, cable connected etc...

Too bad…gotta love the name.

If I was Federal Fleet and I owned a replenishment ship like Asterix I would lease her to the US navy the same way Omega does with the air refuelers.

If they don't want her she is NATO spec. I'm sure some NATO nation will want her services.
