I bet Eby, being a Lawyer by profession, is setting Himself up for a very lucrative post politics life as a representative for BC First Nations.

The eviction part is not the worry.

The worry is that no one on the coast will be able to get a mortgage today, because the banks are pretty funny about being sure that the person that they are loaning millions of dollars to, actually has title to the land.
I heard an article today on CBC Radio about the Tsawwassen Band, which apparently getting into house development in a fairly large way. Every house is a leasehold and lender 'caution' is one of the issues.

This is gold. The left is not known for consideration of second and third order impacts stemming from their agenda.

Has the Federal NDP ever removed from their party manifesto nationalizing the Canadian banks? If not, problem solved from their end.

How's that scenario going to play out if the Fed NDP are never elected? Meanwhile, there is now considerable uncertainty in property ownership rights thanks to crazy leftist shit.

Many years ago a bunch of "99 year" (very long term) leases on Musqueam land near UBC came up for renewal. The band took the opportunity to bring leases up to market value and there was a lot of whining from the residents. (That part of SW Vancouver has always been highly desired residential real estate.) Being in the circle when the music stops is always a risk.

This case has been in the works for 11 years and was settled in court. How is this the fault of "crazy leftist shit"? Also, just in general, how is crown-indigenous relations in any way "leftist shit"?

I heard an interview the other day on that topic (another FN) and a real estate person cautioned that, once a leasehold passes about midpoint, and certainly as it gets near the end, the market value of the property starts to drop since there is no guarantee it will be renewed, let alone at what price.

There is also the legal issue of the fiduciary position of the FN band. I don't think there is a ton of law on the civil liability of First Nations and to what extent claims, even if they are successful, can be enforced. A FN band, perhaps with a new, activist chief and council, could simply declare all leases null and void. Maybe they want the houses for their own people. I'm not sure if it completely clear that the homeowners would have a solid recourse. Insurers and mortgage lenders hate risk. It would be a dumb move for sure, but still . . .

LNG project good to go ....
.... but, wait, not so fast!
Like many have said before, it only takes one - or, in this case, two. We'll see how it goes ... 🍿

Sauble comes into the picture. A number of cottagers up there lost their family retreats as leases were not remewed

Lax Kw'alaams? The band that fronted the Eagle Spirit bitumen line that the other bands scuppered? And Metlakatla, don't they have Alaskan relatives that were interested in hosting the terminus if the BC bands objected?

A lot of back scratching in the future...
