The world is looking at natural gas to back up solar and wind to create electricity.

In the northern hemisphere most residential energy is used for heating.

In electrical generation most fuel energy is wated as lost heat.

The simpler answer to reducing energy consumption in the short term is not to cut off residential natural gas and convert them to electrical heating but, instead, to cut of the electrical supply and generate electricity in each house from natural gss and use all tge heat generated concurrently.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has set a goal for Canada to more than double exports away from the United States over the next decade, meaning exports to other countries will need to grow by $132-billion annually by 2035. Mr. Carney speaks of Canada as an “unabashed” energy superpower. Canada can also be an agriculture and food superpower – and that reality deserves prominence in our national economic strategy.

what would the savings be I wonder in copper and maintenance by themselves if this were done where feasible

Electrical AND natural gas.

Always good to have two options. They aren't interchangeable, but if you have a mix of electrical and gas heating - even if one is only in one room - that's the difference between comfortable and suffering. Also, a propane barbeque for cooking.
