Sadly the Governor of West Virginia has confirmed that two WV MG members were shot and both killed.

Needless to say, the murder of two NG in downtown DC is very, very bad and will be further destabilizing.

I’ve not yet seen confirmation of the degree of injury suffered by the suspect, but he was taken to hospital.
 
Both have died. Suspect wounded and in custody, not confirmed if he’s alive. There’s also replies in the Trump 2024-28 thread, may be worth merging those to this one. I think this event does merit its own thread, this will have repercussions.

Sounds like another (democrat) judge putting sticks in the spokes. This and other federal judge orders are just an exercise in partisan interference.

I’ll hold off on engaging in the politics of that right now given the circumstances. We’ll wait and see how appeals go; and each deployment will have different factors the courts will consider.

CNN’s reporting on it being quite clearly targeted, with one shot at very close range, the other shot running for cover. Both Guardsmen reported as critical condition. Cynically, I’m used to seeing that stated when next of kin notification is pending.


ABC reporting the Guardsmen were one woman, one man. Not clear if they were armed. Also reporting that other National Guard nearby shot and subdued the suspect.

I’m very concerned that there will be a lot of extremely skittish National Guardsmen out there now. The odds have significantly increased of a situation where one reads someone’s behaviour incorrectly and makes a tragically incorrect decision.

NCOs are going to have their work cut out for them.

Time for an ROE refresher.

I also find it absolutely amazing that the status of the two victims is unclear. That should be pretty simple for the government to determine. CNN is reporting, 3 minutes ago, that both are in critical condition.
 
A couple updates via NBC:

  • Both guardsmen shot in the head.
  • Both were armed at the time (from photos I’ve seen of other guardsmen, I see holstered pistols but not rifles, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what they had).
  • FBI director Kash Patel says they’re both critical, not dead.
  • Suspect not yet identified, at least publicly. Two senior law enforcement have told NBC he’s an Afghan national.

Unfortunately I’m very skeptical of their condition. Another video is out on social media shot from across the street in the immediate aftermath, and one victim is clearly being given chest compressions. CPR for gunshot wounds is a very bad sign. I really hope I’m wrong.

It’s not unusual for victims to be described as ‘critical’ while family are notified.
 
Per NBC News:
  • Suspect identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29
  • Served in the Afghan National Army for ten years up until 2021, including alongside U.S. soldiers. (Not sure this matches up unless he joined age 15?)
  • Came to the U.S. in 2021. Presumably part of the bailout of Afghans who worked alongside Americans.
  • Has a wife and several kids.

I read, but have not yet confirmed, that the administration has recently decided to reopen and reexamine a lot of Afghan asylum and/or refugee claims including for those already approved. Maybe a hint to some sort of motive? Or could be he’s just fucked up.

There are some accounts floating around of how it all went down. Nothing I trust enough to repeat. A couple of bystanders national guardsmen might be heroes though.
