I would just like to see some contracts issued to companies that already exist and that actually make things.

Rifles, trucks, boots, armoured vehicles, rockets, ATVs, drones, radios.....

We should be supporting Canadian manufacturers, and providing R&D funding/opportunity to improve their products for the international market. That's how every other country has built a defence industry.

Absolutely this a technology that has a real future of the Government can get out of the way.
Funny part is the Government would like to get out of the way but they're tied up in their own rules and red tape.

That says "may" and you write "must"... is there another resource?

This is the type of information the government should be pushing out on social media, broadcasting and to employers and the general public right now. Again, just for entertainment (until it's not ... )

It's a good exercise anyway that should wake a few people up.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if NDHQ did a snap mobilization drill, picking a random saturday and ordering everyone, reg and reserve to report for duty on 24h or less notice.

Can they - order - Class A to report for a drill?

I don't think in the current framework that this drill could be enforced. There are of course provisions for placing reservists on active service, but I don't think they would apply to training or readiness exercises, or at least would be very unpalatable politically.

Although, we talked about it at work back in the spring. We agreed that the army should do a snap recall of the reserves, if you show up, great, if you can't show up, but you tell your CoC, great. Take all the troops who ghost the army over the recall and boot them out. If they will ghost the army on a recall exercise, they will ghost it on a real mobilization.

It must cost a ludicrous amount of money to make those crappy underwear, zip boots, the metal pan for the ablution kit, seatbelt cutter, and all those other pieces of kit that most people just throw away.

I have no clue with the boots why we don't have a contract with Altbergs like the UK Army, and instead of paying $350 some dollar per person plus whatever it cost to make the zip boots, so like around $450 dollars, it would cost less and the quality of kit will improve

(My friend just got a leather boot, also by Royer, and they look better than the other ones but they don't look the best... why did we get a contract with the same company that make those zip boots? Has anyone who does the kit ever been to Gagetown?)

Some companies refuse to bid on government contracts as they don't want to deal with the bureaucratic hoop jumping and the long wait to get paid.

Well in my personal opinion they should either raise the price of these contracts, because now, after spending X million dollars on boots, they have to spend another X million dollars on boots, because they have to buy their own boots anyways, because the quality of the boots are horrendous, or, they should contact the companies they want privately... I don't know why we went away from the MK4's?

We got the Navistar trucks, because they were the only bidder. If the bidder meets the requirements, then the government has limited options on what it can do.

My guess is a decade + of wars in the desert changed alot of things.

I can't speak for myself because I have never been to a desert, but I've seen those zip boots explode after one LHQ, so I think they won't hold up nowhere...

An order to train, if disobeyed, can be enforced by way of s 294(1) and (2) of the NDA by charges being laid and tried before a civilian court. In my several decades as a ResF legal officer, this provision has often been talked about but never been used because of its impracticality.

I have a feeling nobody wants to do a snap drill and then have to prosecute a quarter of the ResF that didn't show up because they had a date that night...

we had a guy who signed up for DP1, and when we showed up to gagetown to do roll call, he wasn't there, and they asked where he was, because he was like technically AWOL from my understanding, and someone said "oh yeah, he texted me, he just didn't want to show up"

Because everybody's feet are different and lots of us hated the GP boot. I went from Mk3, to CWWB, to GP, to BOOTFORGEN.

Buying my own boots is 100% preferable to being forced to wear boots that dont fit my feet well.

I was hoping you were going to jump in on this. How does 294 work with the nature of Class A service? How do you charge a Class A soldier for not attending as ordered when the whole concept of being class A is that you consent to when you serve? Also, would 294 have to go through a civilian court? It says a summary conviction, which to me says the laying of a service infraction charge and conviction at a summary hearing.

Do you reckon that would improve recruiting and retention then?

The term "summary conviction" refers to the civilian legal system, not to the military justice system for summary infractions as laid out in regulations.
