I’m not sure if this is an improvement. Is it better to have some toff who was born into a seat, or some hack who kissed the right asses and greased the right palms?

Their buddies

They've been filling the place with "buddies" since before the Life Peerages Act (1958) when politicians and fellow travelers were made barons and their inbred first born sons inherited the title and seat. The only difference is that now inbred offspring don't get a vote.
