High Speed Train Coming?-split from boosting Canada’s military spending"

I'm not a fan of the southern corridor either. And really that's where most of the opposition is coming from. But also the southern route triggers demands for additional stops, like Kingston which then forces more complex diversions.
and gee whiz all those pesky peasants living there who might otherwise be able to take the train except having a stop midway would ruin the timing for a two hour run. Must keep it for the elites in the big cities (sarcasm)

A major issue is the definition of the word 'fair'.

If the 'fair' market value of a property is 'X' and the Government offers 'X + 35%' - that could be enough extra compensation for say 30% of those affected. What about the other 70%? If the Government goes and increases it to be 'X + 50%' and that brings the number up another 35%, does that mean that the Government should go back to the first 30% and pay them another 15%? What if we got to the point that there's 10% of those affected left and they are not budging at offers of 'X + 65%' - can the Government then just say that's the final offer and we are expropriating you on this date and the OPP will be there to escort you off the land on that date, would that be ok?

It's impossible to pay the families 'what they want' because some fringe individuals will demand buyouts that are outside the realm of reality.
Given that the project is supposed to advance in three phases (Ottawa-Montreal, Ottawa-Toronto then Montreal-Quebec City), if they get really generous on the first go-round, word will get out and it will get r-e-a-l-l-y pricey by phase three.

BTW, the Sheriff would be the one escorting - cops would just be there to keep the peace.

Concerned readers may, or may not, find the Expropriations Act a useful reference,

Actually, it would the federal version but I suspect it is functionally similar.

I don't think that's sarcastic at all,....that's exactly what this is.

Wonder what the expropriation payout was for this?

We were reminded that , even though its emergency services call volume / demand was - much - lower than those 18 lanes, TTC Line 1 transported nearly double the number of people on an average weekday - using just two narrow tracks.

Meh. Nobody is here is arguing in good faith. So I'll just leave that part of the discussion to their circle jerk. I just didn't want to let actual misinformation pass.

You can add up the top 20 TTC bus routes (forget the subway, streetcars and GO Train) and they move almost the same number of people than the 401 through the City of Toronto.

Top 20 TTC bus routes = 716 000 riders per day. They have 162 total routes.

For the 401, roughly half a million vehicles per day and assume 1.5 average occupancy. So 750k ballpark.

I was in Toronto during the two day TTC strike. Set the precedent of them being an essential service. It's complete paralysis without transit.
