Could Tom Clancy have dreamed that one up?
Some allies might argue that a Russian intelligence operation killing German citizens and destroying an aircraft at a strategic logistics hub clearly qualifies. Others might urge restraint, fearful that invoking Article V over a covert drone operation could begin an escalatory process no one could control. Some would no doubt want to see conclusive intelligence linking Russia to the attack, but the allies in possession of that intelligence might not be willing to share all the details of how they know what they know. Germany might instead request Article IV consultations, a process that allows countries to share intelligence, evaluate future risks, and plan joint strategies to address the situation in anticipation of future escalation. Washington could seek additional intelligence before supporting a more forceful response. Each of these positions would have a reasonable argument behind it, and that is exactly what makes conducting such operations attractive to Moscow, Beijing, Tehran, and others.

I wonder if we are getting closer to the end of commercial air travel? It really doesn’t take much for someone to throw a wrench in airport security and if malicious actors want to act on that it would severely increase the cost to protect against such actions.

Unlikely, global society revolves around travel, and air is the fastest means of travel.
Air travel has weathered the hijackings of the 70-80’s, the bombings of the 90’s and 9/11.
Any state supported terrorism against aircraft tends to results in the targeting of the leaders of that regime.
I for one wouldn’t be surprised if some GRU 14th Directorate Colonel suffered vertical deceleration trauma after a fight with a window.
As well as International Intelligence and Law Enforcement Agencies put a lot of effort into ensuring that threats are dealt as early on into planning.
Surface to Air Missiles have been a threat to aircraft for ages — but outside of MH-17 where GRU ‘reservists’ shot down the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777, and Iran Air Flight 655 A300 shot down by the USS Karl Vincenesse, there have not been any incidents.
Folks trying to illicitly buy SAM’s especially MANPADS tend to get rolled up quickly and dropped into deep holes.
Most Quad Copter type UAS have a maximum speed of 200mph in a dive, and require either FPV guidance or Direct Visual. Meaning their ability to interdict aircraft are fairly limited to either parked on the runway, or taxiing.
Unless directly oncoming the ability to strike an aircraft on takeoff climb or landing is limited.
Non Kinetic C-UAS methods exist that can limit the likelihood of success of those sort of attacks. As well as increased sensors and perimeter patrols to prevent intruders into restricted areas.
Don't be so confident about this. Pearson had a problem with a chap operating one of those jetpack parachutes a few years back. He would launch and climb out into the centreline of the approach; scare the hell out of two or three (no more) a/c on approach and then disappear again. Don't recall if they ever did find him. An approach covers a lot of ground and it is a predictable track. Wouldn't take much to programme a GPS to fly up the glide slope and you can be certain it will be on centreline as will the inbound. That is the beauty of GPS. You don't need speed when it is opposite direction and pinpointing the launch point with ground vehicles is pretty much hit and miss.

Local LE ERT can kinetically terminate those types of folks.
You’re requiring now some sort of GPS enabled system. That is a tad more complicated than the original threat of a quadcopter using VFR.
There are many potential threats — the folks who have the capability/ability and desire to act on them are fairly limited.
I suspect if you started researching GPS enabled glide path, as well as some larger UAS, that someone may come and knock on your door.

the biggest problem we have is we always think complicated. Set a telescope at 3 degrees and use a FPV to keep your a/c on the ball(hell you can rent a surveyors scope and dial the angle in with no questions asked. KISS is the key to success. We don't have the financial resources to protect everything and if you don't protect everything a determined soul will discover the thing you overlooked. It is much better to just not piss off your neighbour in the first place if you can possibly avoid it

Unfortunately there are a number of people in a lot of NATO countries that are unwilling to accept this, either due to a general lack of understand of Putin and Russia under Putin -- or have been led to false conclusions by Russian state sponsored disinformation (and now Iranian, Chinese and other state sponsored disinformation).Russia? Conducting undercover offensive operations in Europe?
As well a cynical person may look at the current US Administration and come to the conclusion that at times it seems to be doing their best to distract from these pesky Russian acts of war.
