Trump administration 2024-2028

Be better if everything is tried in criminal courts rather than newspapers, although I suppose going forward the standard for all sex offences by all offenders could be, "drop all the allegations and personal history possible into the media, then go to court".
Not perfect, but closer to the gold standard for sure.

That said, in the past, previous bits of wrongdoing have been chewed on by various political bodies, with people giving the results credence inversely proportionate to the level of approval said people have for the target of the probes. Hence my caveat.

They're trying really hard to push this angle in preparation for next week.

All he did was say the quiet part out loud.

So who gets the credit if he does well? Russia?

The administration is lining up its scapegoats (Canada, fraud, etc) to blame if Republicans do poorly; conservatives not particularly attached to Trump will - with substantial cause - blame mostly the administration (rhetoric, policies) if Republicans do poorly. Democrats are priming supporters for claims of election fraud and lining up an army of lawyers if they do poorly.

Watching TV series like The West Wing and The Diplomat, which portray the U.S. government as a principled force for good in the world, is like watching some Turtledove alternate-history horse opera. This government of ne'er-do-wells, bozos, grifters, and outright lunatics has taken the U.S. into a dark world.

One thing about the United (really?) States of America: they never do anything half-assed. It's balls to the wall, turn the amp to 11, Thelma and Louise off-the-cliff crazy!

An interesting choice, Hegseth has given the boot to the Pentagon's chief planner. He was appointed by Dan Caine himself after his predecessor was fired exactly 1 year ago today.

I spent some time working in the Pentagon, where I reported to the J5. The criticality of that role cannot be overstated. It seems that disagreements with Elbrige Colby USD Policy and #3 in the DOD are what led to the dismissal. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the principal military advisor to the President of the United States, and the J5 is pivotal in developing that advice. Political appointees less so.

It’s more Veep than West Wing or House of Cards.

Wow... that's yuuuuge....

Meanwhile Canada's growth will slow to 0.9% according to the PBO:

US economy grew at 3.4% annualized rate in 3rd quarter, government data shows

The United States economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3.4% over the three months ending in September, according to a government report released on Thursday.

Growth in the third quarter amounted to an acceleration from 2.2% annualized GDP growth in the previous quarter, U.S. Commerce Department data showed.

The performance in the third quarter also outpaced a 2.5% annualized rate recorded over the first three months of this year.

In response to rising prices, a key long-term Treasury rate has jumped in recent months as investors feared price increases would eat away at their returns. The rise in bond yields has pushed up rates for loans like credit cards and mortgages, threatening to worsen the financial crunch.

Still, the economy has proven resilient by some measures. Hiring has continued to grow, albeit at a slower pace, while unemployment has stayed at a low level by historical standards.

A surge in spending on artificial intelligence has helped boost the U.S. economy in recent quarters. Many of the nation's largest companies have poured funds into the chips and data centers necessary to operate AI.
