HELP PLEASE - I Found an ODD Military Parachute
« on: February 13, 2014, 23:57:32 »
HI:

After days and days of searching and google-ing ..... with no luck .... I stumbled across your site and thought you folks might be able to help.

I bought a parachute. It is from the Royal Canadian Navu (R.C.N)

It is round, approx. 9 1/2 inches across
4 inches thick
wrapped in a round canvas type package with a metal top (or bottom)
and has a zipper going all the way around.
The top in the middle has a weird "spring" type mechanism

it has military stamps on it and serial numbers in the metal

it says
R.C.N
Parachute Pack
MK NC 23 MOD o
565522K
NB

can anyone tell me what this is or how I can learn more about it ???

Thank you in advance for your help
More importantly thank you for your service

Norm

Most likely for an air-dropped sonobouy.

The only 3 things I can think of would be (1) sonobuoy (2) torp or (3) illumination flare.
Everything happens for a reason.

Sometimes the reason is you're stupid and make bad decisions.

You've got yourself the Para section from a Mark 44 ASW torp configured for fixed wing launch. The Aero Stabilizer slows the weapon down and ensures the optimal water entry angle. The Mk 44 was replaced by the Mk 46 Mod 0 in the mid-sixties.

Wikipedia has a picture of the Mk 44 with your chute so you can see how it looks installed. It attaches to the exhaust port of the weapon. That's the strange 4 detents on the plate.

I hate to tell you this but it's scrap. Maybe an army surplus store would give you a couple of bucks for it but I doubt it. Putting it on Ebay is possibly a violation of the UN's new Arms Trade Treaty. You'll have to google that first. I'm not an expert on that side of the trade.

Market it as a parachute from an elite and highly-secretive unit of dwarf paratroops.  Never underestimate "a fool and his money..."
There’s nothing more maddening than debating someone who doesn’t know history, doesn’t read books, and frames their myopia as virtue. The level of unapologetic conjecture I’ve encountered lately isn’t just frustrating, it’s retrogressive, unprecedented, and absolutely terrifying.

This outfit might buy it from. Send them an email and see if they will save you the trouble of hauling it to the curb on trash day.
