I would argue that discussing / making jokes about something low-stakes is better for mental health. All I can do to influence the big issues is express myself to my elected representatives, vote according to my beliefs, and support the causes in which I believe.

I only go to a Legion when I accompany my Dad. I don't feel any pull to join. Of course, I don't think I've ever really gotten over the Legion supporting that terrible New Veterans' Charters (Not sure if I remember the title correctly.)
