The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

I can't believe there's CAF members that support this absolute travesty of a policy to cancel the F-35 purchase. We're our own worst enemy on procurement.
Frankly I don't see us having much choice, we are only months into a administration that is not going to be restrained till their midterm elections. We commit to the 16 we have contracted for, promise to get a unspecified number of more F-35's and then lease a few Griffins to evaluate. It's not like we will have all the infrastructure anyways to handle all of the proposed F-35's or the people to maintain them. This approach gives us some leverage in this ongoing tariff war.

We have a choice. F35 is for NORAD predominantly, we need it and in significant numbers. Use the Gripen talks to leverage better IRB out of Lockheed Martin then buy what we said we're going to buy. If we want to diversify, grab Rafale or Gripens AS WELL as a bridge to Gen 6 aircraft.

In fact, I bet if you told Trump we'd be willing to buy up to 150 F35 in exchange for dropping all tariffs, he'd play ball. Give him the out he wants and stop cutting our nose off to spite our face.

Yes because all those strategic corporals and genius captains can’t be wrong 😉

I have nothing against corporals or captains. The stooopid ones I have issues with .

Instead of the Gripen why not get some Apaches or A10s ?

Us the F35 for fighter work and finally get our people on the ground some air support.

I do not think we should be buying a single Gripen.
If we do not commit to the full 88 F35's, the secondary plane should be the Raffaele. We need to have French buy in for us to be able to participate in the Euro defence rearming. Sweden doesn't carry enough weight in order to get us in, France does. The UK themselves are trying to get into it and its not guaranteed because they are no longer part of the EU.

Tell me again why the the US are going to give Sweden permission to export the US tech in Grippens to Canada so that we can avoid buying F35s to get back at the Americans?

In my view, if Canada wants out of F35, it is far too late. We have already paid for 16. 16 is not a viable fleet, so we have to buy 40-50 to get a viable fleet, as has been explained multiple times, upthread, by people who know.

Short of buying Chinese or Russian, the only other current fighter option to avoid ITAR issues is Rafale.

So, why the Grippen theatre?

Gripen still uses a licensed GE414 turbofan engine, so US can flex the ITAR-restriction hammer, using the OTBOTBRAR* technique, like they did for Colombia.
