He's a Royal Marine Officer that was posted to Commando Log for a bit.

The Commando Logistics Regiment is staffed, mainly, by Army members (REME, Log, EOD/ATO, Doctors/Dentists, Finance/Admin etc) who have completed the All Arms Commando Course and are serving for a couple of years with 3 Cdo Bde. I had alot of them on my All Arms Course and they were generally very good. Alot were Army level athletes as well as having advanced degrees/technical qualifications of some kind.

So, of course, this means he wasn't 'all that smart' ;)

Is this one of those everyone is a rifleman first things, so all RM Officers are line officers, some just branch off into specialties ?

They do a year long course at Lympstone, which is quite difficult with a high failure rate, that prepares them for a troop commander job in a rifle company in one of the Commandoes.

After their first tour as a troop commander, sometimes as short as a year, they must declare a 'SQ': specialty qualification e.g., SBS, Mountain Leader, PTI, Support Weapons etc. They then go off for additional SQ training and onward employment within 'The Corps' as they call it.

They follow the usual career path of Army Officers, through the various staff courses etc but, until now, the higher levels of MoD command have always eluded them - a major dissatisfier amongst RM Officers who see their Army & Navy colleagues promoted to various 1,2,3,4+ star positions. There are very few of those positions in the Royal Marines because they're so small compared to the others.

The Royal Marines are part of the Royal Navy. Seems fair to me.
Still, it would raise a few eyebrows if a USMC General was appointed Chief of Naval Ops, too - although these days, maybe not as many eyebrows than in the past.

After all, in the immortal words of Tommy Douglas's grandson ....

I always had the impression that the RN would prefer to keep them in the gimp box until absolutely necessary. 😉

The RN would prefer to trade them in for a Frigate, and the Army would like their Engr Regt, Arty Regt, Log Regt and other 'on loan' assets back...
