2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

Pretty sure they already knew that. Most military officers probably have a much better grip on this stuff than most people in Congress.
This particular member of Congress was a colonel in the USAF, both active and reserve. He was a JAG officer. So he probably has a much better grip on this stuff than the vast majority of members of either.

Surely. But the Democrats sure are serially insecure about the US military since Trump was sworn in. As the author of the content wrote, "This should not even need to be said." So why should it need to be said? They felt pretty good about Milley reaching out to the Chinese. Trump didn't up-end the entire US officer corps. Most people were confident the collected senior officers were not enthralled by Hegseth's pep talk. What happened to that confidence?

What happens a lot in high-heat politics is that people start to project their own flaws onto the other side. People assume others want to behave the way they themselves want to behave. That should be more concerning than some supposed inability of the US officer corps to remember its oath and understand the plain text of the constitution.

Usually the response to a no-brain reminder would be, "I know my fucking job."

Does ‘I know my fucking job’ always equal ‘Doing your fucking job?’

So I guess he can kiss his Colonel's pension goodbye?

Among everyone I've ever know who was a professional at that level, yes. Maybe the juniors need some reminders and haven't completed all the modules of training a career requires, but the staff at the level that matters here aren't Lt Calley. There will be a few ciphers in any large enough population, but not enough to matter.

They're talking about a potential invasion of Greenland. Did they stop to think about the composition and experience of the target audience that would actually be responsible for planning and undertaking that kind of thing? Not likely. It was an insulting political posturing statement, delivered by someone who conveniently is personally above reproach.

[Add: to me, it's in the same vein as Obama lecturing/admonishing the USSC with members present during one of his SOTUs. It's the sort of thing Trump is notorious for.]

Again I’m just disappointed that it’s come to the point that we even talking about blue on blue scenarios over a froze rock that the US already has a substantial base on and easily could have more if they built them due to an existing 70yr old treaty.
It’s beyond ridiculous.

Amen.

Not endorsing the source:

"Donald Trump Orders Army Chiefs to Draw Up Plans to Invade Greenland"
Oh my. Several sources repeat it. Not sure how much more damaging that can be than musing that a military option is on the table, but it must add something to the pile.

There's a fine hair to split here: being ordered to draw up plans, and being ordered to execute them, are two different things. I'll look to the latter as the rubber/road moment.

NATO faces a major crisis over Greenland. Europe seems powerless to stop it

I saw that and couldn't help thinking that that might be the entire point.
Europe is powerless to stop it.
Denmark is certainly powerless to stop it.
Suppose it was Russia knocking and not the US.
Would Denmark stop it?
Could Norway react to a Russian activation of neutral Spitzbergen?
Or would they leave it up to the US? Like we would?

The entire western world moved over to utensils - knives, forks, spoons - in 1945 to eat our food and we all marvel at how civilized we were.
Now someone has come along and they’ve thrown away the utensils and has started ripping their meat with their bare hands and teeth and we look on in shock, in horror and are stunned.
So, do we drop our utensils and start using our hands or do we collectively pick up our knives and end them?

Is that true? Or is it simply because they've forgotten how to talk/appeal to the American people other than to blame them for Trump?

Trump may be the object, but he isn't the fulcrum.

Of course Europe can stop it. But they will have to stop convening meetings and start acting.
In fairness Denmark's PM has shown an admirable tendency to act but she needs support and trying to get even the 9 or 10 JEF members engaged with Starmer in the UK would be hard. The entirety of the EU? Impossible.

Starmer could send troops to Greenland to ease Trump’s security fears

European allies in talks to deploy force to counter growing threat from Chinese and Russian militaries

The Telegraph's headline.

Swing A - to reassure the Danes and Greenlanders
Swing B- to reassure Trump's Americans.

.....

So the Brits and French will have to spend time in the frozen dark.
Just like the Americans at Pituffik. And Fairbanks.

Believe me, compared to Sennybridge in the winter time it's going to be a big improvement ;)

And us at Ptuffik and Alert.

The heating is likely to work, right enough. And it'll be a dry cold. They'll not have to wring out their woolies in the morning.
